Obituary of Gururaja Beejady Koteshwara Rao
July 19, 1936 – February 10, 2025
It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Gururaja (Guru) Rao, on February 10th, 2025. He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Usha Rao, sons Srik (Nandini), Vasu (Cari), and Krishna (Judi), grandchildren Kiran and Akhila, brothers Vadiraja, Sridhara, sister Seethu, and numerous nieces and nephews in India, Canada, USA, Australia and Europe. He is predeceased by his sister Vijaya.
Guru was born in Tumkur, India. He completed his Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering in 1959 at the University of Mysore, India followed by a Master of Engineering (M.E. Aeronautical) degree at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India in 1961. After completing his Master’s Degree, Guru was hired as a turbine jet engine design engineer at HAL (Hindustan Aircraft Limited) in Bangalore, India where he spent three years, before emigrating to Canada.
In 1964, Guru came to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada to pursue a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, which he completed in the spring of 1969 at the University Of Saskatchewan. In the fall of that same year, he joined the Saskatchewan Power Corporation as the Manager of Natural Gas Transmission Operations (Saskatoon office) after which the family relocated to Regina in 1971. Guru was also a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA), and life members of both the Association of Professional Engineers of Saskatchewan and the Canadian Society of Automobile Engineers.
Guru was a member of the Gyro Club of Regina from 1972-2002 and served as the Club President from 1980-1981. He was an active member of the Eckankar spiritual community for over 40 years in both Saskatchewan and Ontario.
In 1996, after 27 years of service, Guru retired as the Director of Operations, TransGas. He enjoyed his career in engineering in Saskatchewan and was grateful for many friendships that were cultivated with his colleagues.
Guru was a curious person and an avid reader with a broad range of interests. He enjoyed a good laugh, socializing with friends and family, and was a generous, kind and great family man. When on road trips, which were meticulously planned, Guru was in his element snacking on his favourite corn chips while crisscrossing the continent multiple times showing the sights of this great land to the numerous relatives visiting from India. His punctuality was one of his signature traits – always planning an additional 10 minutes for unforeseen circumstances! He was a mentor to many and a man of principle with strong values, who believed deeply in providing service and help to others. As a proud citizen of Canada since 1973, Guru was very grateful for the many opportunities that Canada gave him and his family and for the many lifelong friendships that he formed with so many people.
A private family memorial service is expected to occur this year at a later time. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made in Guru’s memory to any charity of choice.
