Gordon LeBlanc
1947-2024
Gordon LeBlanc, 77, fondly known as Russell, Blink, and
Hockey Papa, of Brooklyn Corner, passed away peacefully at home on
Thursday, December 31, 2024, in accordance with his wishes. Born in
Kentville, he was a son of the late Edward and Kathleen (Graves)
LeBlanc.
Like many young people in his era, Gordon was heartbroken
over the loss of his father, Edward, at a young age. Being the oldest
of the sons, he took his role of stepping up very seriously. His
father taught him how to work and live off the land. Gordon certainly
had no green thumb but thankfully his friends did, and they were
always willing share their harvest. His father taught him to take
pride in his work, Gordon was very proud of what he had; he wasn’t in
competition with anyone, and he wanted everyone to win in life. Gordon
didn’t judge, and you certainly knew where you stood without asking.
He loved chatting visit and could share stories like no
other.
Gordon worked as a truck driver for Hostess Foods, he held
various jobs doing farm labour, but his absolute favorite job and
passion was scrap metal junking: he took great pride in what he did.
Gordon was an avid fur trades person, harvesting many animals for
pelts for the Hudson’s Bay Company. He took great pride in
his pelts and in his ability to harvest them, earning himself a
lifetime membership and honorary status in the Hudson’s Bay
industry. He received many certificates, plaques and bonuses for the
quality of his fur.
Gordon enjoyed nature, he loved to fish with friends and
family. He was a true Blue Noser, proud to live in Nova Scotia. He and
his wife, Ethel enjoyed taking anyone who wanted to explore our
beautiful province. They took leisurely drives to discover
destinations, accompanied by the tunes of Hank Williams on any dirt
road. Gordon’s roots ran deep, living and ultimately passing
away on the same property purchased by his father, a home successfully
paid off many years ago.
Gordon had an amazing ability to
connect with people, he could hold your attention as he shared
stories, many laughs and offered a listening ear. Our favorite saying,
“play it by ear,” reflected his view of embracing life as it
came. He taught us all life is worth fighting for, and the importance
of doing things right.
The North Bishop Road community held a special place in
Gordon’s heart, a place of love, friendship and respect. He
spoke fondly of his neighbors, often asserting that no better people
could be found. A simple lift of his vehicle’s hood was an
unspoken invitation for friends to stop by and lend a hand. The
treasured friendships he made along the way enriched his life and were
a true testament to his spirit. Gordon wished to give special mention
to Junie and Cecil Bond, and to countless others for their friendship.
In accordance with his final wish, Gordon will be laid to rest beside
his friends from North Bishop Road, individuals he considered family.
Reuniting with lifelong friends like Allen Toney, Egra Bishop, Bobby
Creemer and countless others. Gordon leaves behind cherished memories,
profound lessons, and enduring love for family, friends, and
community.
Gordon is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Ethel,
Brooklyn Corner; daughters, Nellie McKinnon of Newfoundland and Karla
Bent of Waterville; son, Gordon “Gordy” LeBlanc of
