Glykeria (Carol) Demitt Obituary
It is with heavy hearts that we announce that Glykeria (Carol) Demitt passed away peacefully in her sleep on February 20, 2025. Carol was born on January 2,1931 in the town of Nemea, Greece to Sotirios and Aikatarini Papantoniou. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and sister.
Carol lived a simple life during her youth in Nemea, which was deeply affected by the difficulties endured during the second World War. She met her future husband Panagiotis (Peter) when he paid a visit to his brother, who happened to be boarding with her family. They were married by October 25, 1954, and their first son Anast followed shortly after in 1957. Barely six months later, the young family embarked on their journey to Canada, arriving in April of 1958.
Peter and Carol worked tremendously hard to establish themselves as Canadians in those early years. By 1960, Carol had her second son, George, and after saving for many years, Peter and Carol opened their first business – a small grocery store in the Kingsland Shopping Center. From here, Carol’s tireless work ethic truly shone – she worked alongside her husband in his many business endeavours, and raised her two sons all the while being an exceptional host and homemaker. Carol was famous for her delicious cooking, and always was the center of the family for holidays and special occasions. She also loved to spend time in her garden, growing beautiful flowers and vegetables every summer.
Carol’s Greek Orthodox faith and community was also an important part of her life. She spent much of her spare time volunteering with the Ladies Philoptochos Society, and was an important fixture at the St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church of Calgary. Her melomakarona would always be the first to sell out at the church Bazaar, and she was renowned for making the loukoumades at the community’s annual Greek Festival. Apart from her family and her home, Carol’s most significant accomplishment and joy was being a Grandmother to Carolyn.
Yiayia Glykeria was there for every school lunch (where lamb chops and pastitsio were regular menu items, much to her picky granddaughter’s chagrin), every after-school pick-up and she ensured Carolyn made it to Greek School and Sunday School. Apart from her family and her home, Carol’s most significant accomplishment and joy was being a Grandmother to Carolyn. Yiayia Glykeria was there for every school lunch, every after-school pick-up and she ensured Carolyn made it to Greek School and Sunday School every week. To say that they were two peas in a pod is an understatement, with matching beauty, independence and wit.
Carol is survived by her son Anast (Diane), her son George, and her granddaughter Carolyn (Michael). She is also survived by her sisters-in-law Eleni, Nitsa, Zoe and Vasiliki, along with many godchildren, nieces and nephews in Canada and Greece. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband Peter (2022), brothers Andreas (2006) and Antonios (2024) and her infant grandson Peter (1990).
The family would like to extend their heartfelt and sincere thanks to Drs. Shimizu, Fleck and White for their compassion and care. We are also appreciative of the kindness and attention Carol received while at Wentworth Manor (2018 to 2024) and at Glenmore AgeCare the last six months.
A Private Family Service will be held in accordance with her wishes with Interment to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to the Hellenic Community of Calgary Philoptochos Society.
