St. Onge, Gloria Jean (Wirrell) – It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dearly loved daughter, wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, Gloria Jean (Wirrell) St.Onge at the age of 84 on August 3, 2025.
Born in Halifax, she was the eldest of two girls, just two years older than her sister, Francine.
Upon completion of High School Mom went to Miss Murphy’s Business College. She then worked for Nova Scotia Light & Power where she balanced the accounting system which was quite a feat, both physically and mentally in those days. Mom’s career was cut short when she met the love of her life, Maurice. They married in 1959 and the first of four children arrived in 1960. While raising her kids Mom spent a number of years supporting them as they played hockey, figure skated, took swimming lessons, tennis lessons, played lacrosse and baseball. When MicMac Mall opened in 1973 Mom started working part time at Simpson Sears in the hardware department and thoroughly loved her job. Mom liked to keep busy and when Dad built our home in Lower Sackville she was there to help. Her gardening skills were second to none. Throughout the years she maintained their properties so beautifully that a real estate company took photos to use in their advertising. She loved decorating and her sewing skills were amazing. She loved crafts especially crochet, knitting and ceramics. Upon the arrival of her first Grandchild, Mom used her newest skill of cross stitching and began to make Christmas stockings for the entire family. She also completed many gorgeous cross stitched artwork pieces that hold special memories. Mom babysat many kids and thoroughly enjoyed when she was able to care for her grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her loving husband of 63 years, Maurice.
She is survived by her sons, Rene, Andre (Jeannette), Marc (Susan); daughter, Lisa (Heith) Klaassen; grandchildren, Kaleigh, Steven, David, Jessica, Craig, Amanda, Peter, Zachary, their partners; and 14 great-grandchildren. Mom loved her family and she appreciated their love and support.
Her family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the staff at both the Dartmouth General and Twin Oaks Memorial Hospitals, and the Continuing Care Nurses. A very special thank you to our dear friend Bine who was a great help to both of our parents; and a very special thank you to Cindy who was so amazing assisting Mom and taking great care when we needed help. We’d like to acknowledge Cindy for putting up a great fight playing scrabble, get out the book, that’s not a word, ha!
Mom has requested that, in lieu of a funeral, her family gets together, shares some stories and great memories.
Cremation has taken place.
