It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our sweet mother
Gladys, with Joanne, her daughter and caretaker by her side. Mom worked hard all her life,
mostly from home as an excellent and always busy seamstress or at times reupholstering
furniture. Mom also taught sewing in Grand River and St. Peter’s back in the 70’s. She also did
a brief stint as a telephone operator back in the day when party lines existed and you needed
an operator to connect calls!
The family moved to Newfoundland in 1960, a place which she dearly loved, and where her
youngest daughter, Joanne, was born. They returned to L’Ardoise in 1969 where they became
faithful and very involved members of both the church and community organizations. If you
were looking for Mom during the L’Ardoise Acadian Festival, you were sure to find her in the
kitchen of the community center. Mom also taught religion to the Grade 2 class for many
years, and they all loved her.
Gladys is survived by her brother Harold Martell, daughter Isabelle (Louis) Sampson, Michael
(Margaret) Martell, and Joanne Martell, her unwavering and loving caregiver for the past 6
years. She is also survived by her adored grandchildren, Darren, Kenny, Sean (Christi), Yvette
(Trevor), Tanya, Dawn (Marc) and Matthew, as well as her great-grandchildren, Nicolas,
Braeden, Kaelin, Connor and Cooper.
She was predeceased by her husband John, who was the love of her life, daughter Evangeline
in infancy, and oldest son Walter, as well as siblings Oswald, Leonard, Paul, Flavian, Evangeline,
Edna, Sophie, Delia, and Emeline, and one sibling who died in infancy.
We would like to thank Mom’s nurse practitioner, Amanda Landry for always being there for
her, the VON nurses and home care workers who were such a huge part of Mom’s life, as well
as Joanne’s. They always treated Mom and Joanne with respect and love, and often went
above and beyond, when we needed it. We will never forget you. To our cousin, Darrell
Martell, your unconditional support throughout these last six years has been amazing. From
early morning snow removal and sanding sessions to knowing we could count on you no
matter the time of day, you hold a special place in our hearts.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. Funeral and burial at a later date.
