Obituary of Gisela Martha Anni Gohs
Gisela Gohs passed away peacefully with her daughters by her side on Friday, February 28th, 2025, at the age of 93.
She is survived by her daughters, Gitta (Brad Voisin) and Heidi, and her four grandchildren, Amanda (Andrew Novakowski), Adam, and Benjamin and Levi.
Gisela was predeceased by her mother and father, Dorothea and Franz, and her siblings, Ulla, Lotti and Franz. She was the youngest of her family.
Gisela (known as Gila to those who knew her well) was born on August 17th in Lüneburg, Germany, in 1931, where she and her three siblings were raised, although she tragically lost both her father and brother in the war. She spent her youth helping her mother run the family general store. She met her husband, Paul, when she was only 16 years old at a local dance. They were married 5 years later on September 15th, 1951, while still living in Germany. In May of the following year, together, they embarked on their greatest adventure, when they boarded a freighter with only two wooden boxes holding all of their possessions, for a multi-day journey across the Atlantic Ocean to begin a new life in Canada. For one year, they earned their right to become Canadian citizens, by working as indentured labourers on a farm in Listowel, Ontario. Thereafter, they moved to the Kitchener-Waterloo area, where they eventually bought their own home on Vermont Street, where they lovingly raised their two daughters. Gila had a very close relationship with her mother, who joined them a couple of years after they emigrated and shared their home as well.
With a love of nature, water, and beaches, they purchased some land on the shores of Lake Huron where they built a family cottage from the ground up, which is still in the family today. Many of their closest friends also built cottages in the area, and together they formed a close-knit extended family filled with warmth, laughter, and so many wonderful happy traditions and memories.
Her daughters will remember her as a loving, gentle mother, who brought stuffed toys and puppets to life with her wonderful imagination. After focusing on raising her daughters as a stay-at-home mom, Gila worked as a bookkeeper for a local German company, Kraemer & Grebe. She later worked alongside her husband, Paul, as property managers for Grerei Investments before retiring. She loved nature and feeding the neighbourhood and cottage chipmunks and squirrels, an entertaining pastime which her daughters enjoy as well to this day. She was a talented seamstress, even making her daughters’ clothing when they were young. She loved romance novels and had a keen interest in astrology, but her biggest pride was baking delicious German tortes and other pastries for ‘Kaffee und Kuchen’ time. Gila and Paul were members of the local German Concordia Club, where they loved to be social and dance the night away multiple times per week. Gila was very active in her younger years, exercising daily to stay fit, and engaging in waterskiing, alpine and Nordic skiing, and even playing on the local ringette team. Unfortunately, struggles with osteoarthritis slowed her down in later years.
Our family would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the wonderful staff at Forest Heights Long Term Care, and especially to the nurses and PSWs of Geiger House. We will be forever grateful for the exceptional care, warmth and love that our mother felt in her final years because of them.
A private family service to honour our mom’s life will be held at the time of burial on May 15th at Parkview Cemetery. Condolences for the family and donations to the Arthritis Society Canada or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada may be arranged through the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home at 519-745-8445 or via www.erbgood.com.
