It is with profound sadness, the family of Giovanni Muia announces his passing on October 10, 2025, at the age of 94.
Giovanni was born to Michele Muia and Fortunata Baggetta in Siderno Calabria, Italy on January 20, 1931.
Giovanni immigrated to Thunder Bay in 1951. Giovanni worked tirelessly in many jobs such as construction, as a ship hand (sailing the Great Lakes), flour processor at Robin Hood Flour, as well as a grainhandler, at Saskatchewan Wheat Pool, from where he finally retired.
10 years after arriving in Thunder Bay, he returned to Italy, met and married the love of his life Angela Baggetta, with whom he shared the next 64 years. They had 3 children, and together built a life centered on love and the importance of family.
Giovanni had family spread across the world between Italy, Australia and Thunder Bay, but he made sure the distance did not impact the bond he had with each of them. As family was the most important, he loved to maintain the family traditions such as gardening, making of wine and sausage making, as well as preparing sauces. In his younger years, he loved fishing and hunting.
Giovanni had a special bond with his grandson Luciano Caccamo. Unfortunately, for the past 4 years, Giovanni had complex medical issues and was unable to do many of the things that involved leaving the home. Prior to this, Giovanni and Luciano loved going on weekly outings in Giovanni’s classic Impala. They remained inseparable to the end, and will remain inseperable in heart.
Giovanni is lovingly remembered and will forever be missed by his wife of 64 years, Angela, children Michael (Rose),
Josie (Dino) Caccamo, Tony (Ariane); grandchildren Luciano, Michael, Nicholas, Johnathan and Riccardo. He is also survived by brothers-in-law Carlo (Carmela) Baggetta and Vincenzo (Caterina), and sisters-in-law Catuza, Emila and Mela.
Giovanni is predeceased by his parents, 7 brothers and 3 sisters, as well as several nieces, nephews, and baby grandson Anthony Caccamo.
The family would like to profoundly thank all of the health professionals involved in his care. Special thanks to Dr. Nigro, Dr. Cohen, Dr. Baron, Rogish (lead CHF – TBRHSC), team of Superior North EMS paramedics, the entire teams of CCAC, Bayshore Home Health, and Wesway.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday October 15, 2025 at 11am,in St. Dominic’s Church when family and friends will gather. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to service.
Giovanni will be laid to rest during a private family entombment at St. Andrew’s Cemetery.
Giovanni’s legacy is that he will be remembered for his unrelenting determination of never giving up. This legacy will be carried by each and every one of those who had the privilege of knowing Giovanni.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations in Giovanni’s honour to the Canadian Lung Association.
Services have been entrusted to Westfort Funeral Chapel, 420 Gore St at James.
