He had many friends and was an active member of the community of both Burnaby and New Westminster until his final days.
Gilbert was predeceased by his wife Dorothea (2003). He is survived by a brother Jacquelin (Jack) and sister Huguette, daughter Joanne Barnes and son-in-law George, son Paul and daughter-in-law Deanna, and son Philippe. He was especially fond of spending time with his grandsons, Conner and Carter Verret.
