Gertrude (Gertie) Cote Obituary
It is with deep sadness and profound love that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and sister, Gertrude Helen Marie Cote (Cayer), on Wednesday, December 25, 2024, at the age of 89. Gertrude (Gertie) was born on January 22,1935, in Vassar, MB. That is also where her and Aime raised their three cherished children.
In the late 70s she moved to Powerview/Pine Falls to work for the Gauthier family at the Pinewood Hotel. It was there she met Wilfred Vincent and they were together till his passing in 2001. Many close friendships were made during this time. Mom always spoke fondly of her time and the people she met there.
In Mom’s later life she moved to Winnipeg. She wanted to be closer to family and all the bingo halls were a nice bonus. She lived at Chesterfield Housing for many years till she was no longer able to. By day mom could be seen singing while taking care of the flowers and visiting with her friends at the wrinkle ranch. By night mom would be at the bingo hall. Not only did she play but if help was needed checking bingo’s mom would step in to make sure things went smoothly. She cherished the many friends she made at Chesterfield Housing as well as the many bingos she attended. The family would like to thank everyone for always looking out for her.
Mom was very passionate about sports. You couldn’t call if her Blue Jays were playing or Curling was on! In her younger years she played softball with the Vassar Viqueens. She was an avid bowler and bowled both 5 and 10 pin till she suffered a stroke at the age of 87. Mom also really loved watching her children and grandchildren play ball. Along with her sisters, they loved supporting the Vassar Fastball Club. You didn’t want to make an error when they were watching. You could hear them miles away cheering and harassing the umps. Every pitch Glen ever threw was strike if you asked Mom.
Gertrude will be lovingly remembered by her children: Glen (Linda), Neil, and Verna (Paul); her grandchildren: Rael, Nealen (Dariene), Chad (Shannon), Michael (Lindsay), Rae-Anne (Carey), Kayla, and Laura (Derek); great-grandchildren: Bryce, Tori, Calleigh, Kolton, Aiden, Brady, Parker, and Danica; sisters Francis, Lorraine, Gail (Rick), and Judy; as well as many extended family members and friends.
She was predeceased by her parents, Albert and Alma; her husband, Aime; Partner Wilfred Vincent; her brothers Cub, Richard, David, and Raymond; and her sisters Grace and Aurora.
The funeral mass will be held on Saturday, February 15, 2025, at 1:00 p.m., at Vassar Sacred Heart Church in Vassar, MB., followed by a reception at the Vassar Community Hall.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Actionmarguerite St.Vital Nursing Home for their care and support.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.
