It is with enormous sadness that we announce the passing of Gerald (Jerry) Joseph Baird on Thursday, February 27th, 2025, surrounded by his family in St. John’s at the age of 88. He is also survived by his sisters, Gladys Baird, Rosemary (Bob Tizzard); sisters-in-law Mel Baird, Noreen George and Helena Turner. Jerry was a phenomenal husband and father. He was a lively and genuine conversationalist, effortlessly engaging with family and friends. He cherished his family and absolutely loved listening to music, creating art, and sharing his life with kindness, humour, and empathy. His quick wit and warmth made every interaction memorable, and he had a remarkable ability to make everyone feel welcomed and valued. He spent many, many happy summers since childhood and with his beautiful wife, Nita and their family at their beloved summer home (his pride and joy) in Brigus South. A gifted storyteller, artist, and charmer, Jerry’s spirit was reflected in his love for the beauty around him.
Having worked diligently at McNamara Construction, the Canadian Underwriters Association and then serving as Vice President of Anthony Insurance for many years, Jerry was a well-respected figure and true gentleman in his professional and personal life.
He said these last couple of years: “I have lived a wonderful, long life with a beautiful wife and family, I have been very blessed”. Nita and Jerry were married for 65 years. Their deep love and devotion to each other crafted an incredible & inspiring “Love Story” that has been heartfelt to witness by many over the years.
He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him, including his fur-grandchildren, Bailey, Marley, Otee and Twiggy.
The family extends a special thanks and sincere gratitude to Jerry’s physicians, Dr. Michelle Levy, Dr. Valerie Wareham as well as the doctors and staff (Juanita and Ruth) of the Ross Family Medical Center for their ongoing care and support.
At his request, the visitation will take place on Saturday, March 8, 2025, from 11 a.m.- 1 p.m. with funeral service at 1;30 p.m.at Caul’s Chapel, 84 LeMarchant Rd. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to any children’s charity.
