Gerald Charles Pothier was born on December 27, 1952 in Wedgeport, NS and passed away at Yarmouth Hospital on March 1, 2025.
Gerald was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2015 and although most cancer diagnoses are described as “battles” or “struggles”, he met his with stubborn determination. The words “if I get better” were never spoken in those ten years, it was always “WHEN I get better” and he carried that resolution to the very end.
However, he was more than just a man who fought an illness. In his lifetime he spent 30 years working for MT&T/Aliant, starting as a lineman and working his way up to foreman, followed by a few winters spent banding lobsters, years as a maintenance man and landlord, and 25 years as the resident builder/fixer on the family farm.
He always had a project on the go with thoughts about the next one never far behind. In his down time he spent many hours reading and had a fascination with history. He took up horseback riding as an adult and owned his own horse, “Queenie” until her passing. In his younger years he spent an inordinate amount of time in his work shed building and tinkering with things. He also spent many years with an obsession about his lawn, always making sure it looked just right. These may sound like small or trivial things but combined together they created the man we all knew and called either husband, friend or father.
Gerald leaves behind his wife of 50 years, Bonnie; children David Pothier, Halifax; Dr. Jennifer (Andrew) Schleit, Seattle; and Mary Pothier, Yarmouth; as well as grandchildren Lila and Claire. He is also survived by brothers Milton (Cecile) Pothier and Richard (Sharon) Pothier; brothers-in-law, Sam Cann and Bruce Cann; sister-in-law; Barbara (Donnie) Cann; as well as eleven nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents, Laurie and Elizabeth (Betty) Pothier; brother, Patrick Pothier; parents-in-law, Malcolm and Jessie Cann and sisters-in-law, Janice Cann and Shelly Cann.
Special thanks to family friend, Ray, for his kindness especially during Gerald’s final months and days. Also a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Cindy Boudreau who compassionately cared for both Gerald and his family during the entirety of his illness.
A family service will be held at a later date.
Memorial donations may be made to Friends of Gilles Boudreau Cancer Help Fund.
