Obituary of George Hanes
Hanes, George Thomas – Passed away peacefully in his home in Fort Erie, on January 23rd, 2025 at the age 91. He will be dearly missed by his sisters Carol (Don) Taggart, Rosemary Hanes, Nora (Terry) Moore and Susan Mc Namara and many nieces and nephews, extended family and friends. He is predeceased by his parents Charles and Louise (nee Hebbourn), his brother Charles and his sister Elizabeth (Charles) Warner.
After graduating from Fort Erie Secondary School, George attended the University of Western Ontario, receiving a Bachelor of Science Degree & accepting a teaching position at his old alma mater, Fort Erie Secondary School where he taught for 37 years.
George loved learning and returned to the Universities of Toronto and Waterloo to study physics and math. He felt a good education would lead his students to a better life and encouraged his students to excel.
He worked with students outside the classroom as well, coaching football and basketball, which he loved, studying photography and instilling a love of travel in those young people who joined him.
To make it possible to take his aging parents traveling across Canada and the United States and spend many cold winters in Florida, he purchased an air stream trailer. Always, his thoughts were to make life more enjoyable for others. His last big trip was a wonderful excursion on the Rocky Mountaineer; fantastic views, fantastic food, fantastic people. He maintained his curiosity and adventurous spirit to the very end of a life well lived.
As a good citizen, politics were important to him as a means of bringing positive change to education and to the world. Actively involved in the local and provincial levels, he fought for teachers’ rights, salaries, working conditions, women’s rights, salaries for equal work and a quality education for all students. In recognition, he received several awards for his work.
Like Warren Buffet, George enjoyed the challenges investing money offered. Much of the money he made he donated to many worthy charities. He chose Western University to set up a scholarship fund honoring his parents, Charles and Louise Hanes. Every year, eight lucky young people from the old Niagara South High Schools benefit from George’s generosity if they choose to attend Western University and qualify. As long as the fund continues to make money, so will the scholarships continue to benefit many more young people. What a gift! George was a pay it forward guy, believing that education was capable of transforming life for the better.
A kind, generous, amazing man, he leaves a big hole in our family. We miss him terribly and will never forget him. How lucky we were to have known him and had him in our lives, he embodied a spirit of love and kindness that touched everyone he met. Cremation has taken place, Benner Funeral Services has been entrusted with arragements. A celebration of his life will take place in the spring.
