Obituary of George Grossman
Passed away peacefully after a short illness with his family by his side at Queensway Carleton Hospital on March 11th, 2025. George was in his 97th year and was the beloved husband of the late Alison Ruth Grossman (Miller) for 45 years, loving father of Paula Anne Grossman (Jonathan Waddington), George William Grossman, Andrea Ruth Grossman (James Cook), Jennifer Mary Grossman (Timothy Battle), Margot Elizabeth Grossman (former Simon Wall), Christopher Andrew Grossman (Kimberly Ward), Peter Alan Grossman (Victoria Hastings), Mary Louise Grossman (Harald Salomon), Brian Gerald Grossman (Carolyn Horricks). Dear grandpa of Gabriel, Sarah, Jonathan, Emma, Joseph, Matthew, Rebecca, Thomas, Alison, Simon, Jenna, Joel, Sophia, Brock, Noah, Margaret, Rachel, David, Hannah and Jacob. Great grandpa of Akash, Tian Shan, Mirco, Anna, Benjamin, James, Maximo, Beatrice, Matteo, Miles, Jackson, Carson, Owen, Kit, Archie and Penelope. Dear son of the late Gerald Eugene Grossman and Margaret Bell Grossman (Kniewasser), stepson of Miriam Garrie Grossman (Wilkinson) and brother-in-law of the late Howard Herbert Miller and Andrew David Miller. Survived by his dear cousin Barbara Oakes and husband Frank Oakes, his East Coast MacPhee cousins Sam, Joanne, Heather, Jeanne and Carol, as well as nieces Lorena Reznik and Wendy Morrow.
During his lifetime George was a master builder and Chief of Specifications at Public Works Canada. As a family man, he was a loving, devoted father, son and husband. He was wise and steadfast, kind and generous, an ingenious problem solver and knowledge seeker. Notably, George enjoyed his studies into his mid eighties at Queen’s University in Kingston. He was an avid outdoorsman and spent many happy summers with his family at his cottages at Big Rideau Lake and Charlotte Lake. George was a great athlete and was invited to compete at the World Cup for skiing in 1949. He enjoyed cross country skiing with his wife and friends and downhill skiing into his late ‘70s. George had deep and enduring memories of his time spent as a teenager in NYC working at La Conga and visiting his Cleveland relatives as a child. He loved music, art and literature. Up until the very end of his life he could recite numerous poems from Shakespeare to Dylan Thomas – his particular favorite was Lake Isle of Innisfree by W.B. Yeats.
Special thanks to Pierre-Natacha St. Louis and family, who lovingly cared for George over ten years and to the wonderful staff at Hillel Lodge in the last year of his life. And finally thanks to the caring staff and palliative care team at the Queensway Carleton Hospital.
Donations can be made in George’s memory to Hillel Lodge and the Heart and Stroke Foundation. A memorial service will be held on Friday March 21, 2025 at 1 pm, at Cole Funeral Services, Pinecrest Cemetery, 2500 Baseline Road, Ottawa, Ontario.
