George Smith Obituary
George Laverne Smith, Smitty to many friends and relatives, died in his 91st year on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, at the Brightshores Hospital in Owen Sound. He was born to George and Irene Smith (nee Johnson) on March 15, 1934, in Meaford, Ontario.
George will be greatly missed by his wife, Dianne; his son, Kevin; his daughter, Leanne, and her husband, Ross Rose; his grandson, Jarod; his granddaughter, Danielle, and her husband, Brandon Caswell; his sister-in-law, Sandy Woodcock, and her husband, Ted. He will also be missed by the many friends he made through his constant smile, his loyal friendship, and his willingness to always be there to help and support. Most noted is his best friend of many years, Ab Sheppard.
Before George began a long career working in hydro, he drove a rig and sailed the Great Lakes as a deckhand on a laker. In 1955, while working for Ontario Hydro replacing lines in Mount Albert, Ontario, he met the love of his life, Dianne Davis. A year later he followed Dianne to Toronto where he worked for North York Hydro until he retired in 1992. For some time, he was charged with the responsibility of maintaining and repairing small engines in what they called the tool crib or stores department. He also worked part-time for a cross-dock shipping company and then as a taxi driver. He turned his love of tinkering with all things mechanical (especially lawnmowers) into a small side business.
George was an avid fisherman and hunter; he loved his time at the cottage on Sturgeon Lake near Lindsay, at the hunting camp on Barker Lake near Bancroft, and basically anywhere in the great outdoors. He was a master at fixing or building almost anything; repairing small motors was his specialty.
After 22 years of retirement living in Pine Meadows in Belwood, Ontario, George and Dianne lived briefly in Montgomery Village in Orangeville. At the time of his death, George and his wife of 67 years lived in Southbridge Long-Term Care Facility in Owen Sound.
George’s family wish to thank those who cared for him with such empathy and understanding. Dr. Singh (family doctor), Dr. Roy (his resident), and the palliative care doctor, Dr. Preater, as well as the wonderful nursing staff at Brightshores Hospital gave him comfort and dignity during his final days. Many of those who worked with George at Southbridge Long-Term Care, especially Tammy, Sree, and Nancy always made his days a little bit brighter.
In keeping with George’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no service or gathering at this time. A date will be established and announced for an interment service at the Mount Albert Cemetery in the spring. Arrangements are entrusted to Brian E. Wood Funeral Home, Owen Sound, 519-376-7492.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada, the Heart & Stroke Foundation, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), or your local humane society. Online condolences can be sent to George’s family by visiting his memorial at www.woodfuneralhome.ca.
