George Walker Obituary
George Edward Walker, 91, of Sydney Mines, N.S. passed away peacefully at the Northside General Hospital on January 30, 2024, surrounded by love in the presence of family.
Born to the late Jim and Sybil Vickers on January 27, 1934, George was a treasured younger brother for Eleanor (Nellie). At the age of three and a half, George was adopted by Neil and Katie Walker and raised lovingly alongside sister Marguerite. In later years, family reconnections expanded George’s circle of people to love.
George will be greatly missed by his loving and devoted wife of 67 years, Geraldine (McKenna) Walker; daughter-in-law, Sylvia (late Scott) of Sus, N.B, and their daughter Jessica (Mathieu), daughter, Joyce (Jeff) of St. Stephen, N.B. and their children Erin (Devin), Megan, and Ian. He is survived by his siblings, Eleanor Betts, Peggy Ryba, Dave (Marlene) Farrell, Joe Tracey, Bernadette Keagan, Jim (Linda) Mischook; brother-in-law Michael McKenna (Sally), sisters-in-law Maddie Ferguson and Barbara Evans (Jack); as well as many nieces, nephews, and cherished friends.
Besides his birth and adoptive parents, George was predeceased by his only son Scott, in- laws Frank and Mary McKenna, sister Marguerite Cullinane, brother Jacob (Buddy) Ferguson, brothers-in-law Frank, Blaise, and Louis McKenna, Mike Woroby, Roland Randle, Charlie Keagan, Ken Betts, Walter Ryba, James Cullinane, and sisters-in law Helen Woroby, Ann Marie McKenna Crevier Randle, Donna McKenna, and Joan Tracey.
Growing up, George attended Notre Dame High School and held various jobs at the British Canadian Cooperative Store. Working as a pinsetter in the basement of St. Mary’s Hall allowed him time to hone his bowling skills. He attended night classes to obtain his electrician’s license and was employed for 35 years with DEVCO. Early retirement allowed George and Geraldine to travel across Canada and the United States, to spend time with family, and to enjoy many winters in Arizona and Florida.
As a faithful member of Holy Family Parish; George found solace and strength in his well-worn rosary beads. He served his community as a former member of various boards, as a life member of the Knights of Columbus, and past Grand Knight.
George greeted everyone with a hearty hello and a big smile; but you knew by his twinkling eyes that he loved to tease. He enjoyed an active social life that included many sports such as curling, baseball, and hockey in his younger years. An avid competitive bowler, he had several 400 triples recorded at the Strand Bowling Alley and continued to bowl well into his late eighties. A natural card shark, he loved a good game of Crib, Tarabish, or Auction. George was also a volunteer coach for the Montreal Canadians and NY Yankees, providing robust guidance to the television from the comfort of his armchair. Above all, his favorite activities involved being with family and friends at the cottage in Ingonish, swimming in the waves with his grandchildren; and cooking up a big scoff so that everyone left with a full belly and a warm heart.
The family would like to extend a very special thank you to Dr. Michel McKeough for his care throughout the years; as well as to all the staff, nurses, and doctors at Northside General Hospital who cared for George during his recent hospitalization.
Cremation has taken place; Arrangements have been entrusted to the compassionate care of J.M. Jobes Funeral Home. A Visitation will be held Monday, March 3rd from 6-8 pm with a funeral church service be held on Tuesday March 4th, 2025, 11 am at Holy Family Parish, Main Street, Sydney Mines.
