In Loving Memory of George Alexander Hamilton
(Retired Forester with the Ministry of Natural Resources)
George was born in Toronto on March 6, 1928 and passed away peacefully at home on his birthday on Thursday, March 6, 2025, with his family by his side, at the age of 97.
Beloved husband of the late Marjorie (nee Canam)(2021) for over 70 years. Loving father of Rod (Marion), Marnie (the late Steve) Bowcott, and Don (Kathy). Loving grandpa of 9 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. Predeceased by his brothers Buster and Rod and by his sister Mae McKay.
Nana came by train from Markstay and stayed with family until George was born. Grandpa was the CPR agent in Markstay, then Parry Sound. George lived in Markstay until he went to the University of New Brunswick for forestry. Summers were spent in Nipigon on a timber cruising crew. In 1948 he met Marjorie Canam, who was a nursing student in Fredericton and they were married in 1950 in a double wedding in Fredericton. After the wedding they moved to Gogama where dad was a forest protection supervisor in training. Rod was born in 1954 in Parry Sound, where Marjorie went to give birth. As his career progressed, George had several postings, including Sioux Lookout, where Marnie was born in 1958. After several more postings, including Sudbury, where Don was born in 1962, and Port Arthur where dad was District Forester. George then moved the family to Toronto, where he became the Chief of Operations for Natural Resources. Finally, George became the founding Director of the Frost Centre in Dorset, where he stayed until his retirement.
George loved the outdoors. He kept himself busy as an amateur pilot and had his own plane. He also hunted for many years with a group of friends on Cockburn Island. He volunteered with the Stanhope Seniors Group, was a volunteer fireman and, until only recently, coordinated the weekly shuffleboard club at the Stanhope Community Centre.
In keeping with George’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a private family interment will be held at St. Stephen’s Cemetery in Algonquin Highlands at a later date.
Memorial Donations to the Haliburton Highlands Health Services Foundation (HHHSF) would be appreciated by the family and can be arranged through the Gordon A. Monk Funeral Home Ltd., P.O. Box 427, Minden, Ontario K0M 2K0.
