Obituary for
Garnet Richard Murrie
August 1971 – February 2025
Garnet Murrie died suddenly at his Edmonton home on Feb. 4, 2025, at just 53.
Born in Winnipeg to Jim and Kathy Murrie, he was the eldest of three. Raised in Grande Prairie and Peace River, he disliked school — ADHD and dyslexia – but persevered to earn his high school diploma, a graphic arts diploma and a number of university-level courses.
Garnet moved to Edmonton in 1988, then lived in Calgary several years before returning to E-ville where he raised his awesome son, Modi. Despite splitting up, Garnet and Chary remained friends and always put Modi first. Garnet called Modi his proudest achievement.
Garnet worked many years as a graphic designer, producing gig posters (SNFU, the Smalls, the Lams, etc.) that sprouted on lampposts, shop windows and pubs all over Edmonton and Calgary, and appeared on the covers of Vue and See magazines. One of his designs is in use (with credits) worldwide by Antifa, the anti-fascist movement.
The past 10 years he has been a Service Provider with Neighbourhood Bridges, offering a caring and supportive home environment to individuals with complex needs.
If ever there was a “gentle giant,” Garnet was that: fiercely loyal to family and friends, but also occasionally fierce: he did not suffer fools gladly.
He was a proud big brother to Trish, Andrea and Josh and loved his nieces: Ellie, Hannah and the late Kamryn. He was predeceased by his dad Jim this past summer.
Garnet will be sorely missed by his son, mum, step-mom, sisters and brother, long-time girlfriend Laura, ex Chary and aunties Gen, Heather, Nerisa and Mimi, cousin Eric, as well as many friends that were like family.
No funeral is planned – he would have hated that. A wake will be held Feb. 22, upstairs at the Black Dog. All friends are welcome to drop by, from 3-7 p.m.
Cremation has taken place. May the Valkyries carry this “soldier” to Valhalla.
To honour Garnet’s memory, please give to any programs that help people on the streets. When you ask someone “how are you?” – mean it and listen to their replies. And vote, whenever and wherever you can.
