Sharon Ruth Froese, 15 August 1951 – 29 January 2025.
Sharon made the most of the dash between those two dates.
Sharon loved her work as a sociology professor. She encouraged students to relax before exams by wearing earrings in the shape of toilets, a gift from a mischievous nephew. (She leaves many photo albums devoted to her nieces and nephews.) She was a strong feminist and helped start Planned Parenthood in Cape Breton. Sharon loved music and helped organize International Women’s Day celebrations and open mic ceilidhs called A Load of Wood. She knew when to be funny and crazy (it wasn’t really your birthday until Sharon played kazoo) and when to quietly comfort and support you.
When Sharon’s health became more fragile, she moved to Toronto to be close to family and doctors. We shared many happy moments over the years, and these memories are a comfort now. Sharon is survived by her siblings, their partners, their children and grandchildren, a large extended family, and her many friends. Sharon loved you all and treasured your friendship. Her last words were “I love you.”
Instead of a service, listen to music that you love or, if you can, find a pub with live music. And raise a glass to Sharon.
