Frederick Hatley
juillet 8, 1940 — janvier 9, 2025
Fred was born to Ethel and Sidney Hatley on July 8th, 1940 in Riverhurst, Saskatchewan. He was the youngest of four children. As a child, he had a cart which he would hitch up to his dog who was part wolf and go-for-rides. He showed an early interest in his first calling, carpentry, as one of his earliest memories was using a hammer to drive nails into the step of his childhood home – and then having to take them back out so as not to waste them.
Fred’s parents died while he was quite young, and he lived with his sisters Betty (Eldon) Songer on a farm near Mortlach, and Joan (Leonard) Kent near Riverhurst. After a short time, he settled in with Joan and Leonard and became a ‘big brother’ to their children Gordon, Karen, and Rodney.
He graduated high school in Riverhurst and then went on to work in construction. He worked for Emil Horosco Construction building schools, hospitals and working on parts of the Gardiner Dam. Fred went on and became a teacher at Saskatchewan Technical Institute (STI) Moose Jaw, teaching at the high school in Biggar, then moving to Prince Albert to teach carpentry and drafting at Tech / Carlton Comprehensive Highschool.
He met his wife, Edna on a double date in 1969 and were married for 54 years. Fred and Edna loved to garden, canoe, camp, and volunteer. He had a special gift for starting plants and grew and preserved Baba’s tomato plants. Fred enjoyed fishing in the many lakes near Prince Albert. He loved to dance jiving with Edna, old time waltzing & square dancing. Both he and Edna enjoyed taking the grandchildren camping in their trailer to nearby lakes and beaches. Fred enjoyed socializing with his many friends, and it often overlapped with his passions.
Fred had many professional highlights, including becoming a journeyman carpenter, a Red Seal instructor, co-authoring a textbook, Building Construction Technology, which was in print for 30+ years used in high schools, polytechnicals and universities around the world. He enjoyed taking teams to the Canada Skills Competitions. He took up stained glass work in the 1980’s and did many projects including a door in their home and a window which he brought with them to Saskatoon.
Fred was a strong believer in family and community. A lifelong member of the United Church he was often on the property committee for the Calvary United church in Prince Albert, working on roof and building repairs; getting a stair lift and later an elevator installed. He delivered Meals on Wheels for many years. Fred loved making connections with family, taking time to visit whenever he could. The summer before he and Edna were married, he made a trip back to England to meet some of his relatives and kept in touch for many years. He loved and was deeply proud of his children and their spouses, of his grandchildren and their hopes, wishes, and dreams.
Fred passed away in Saskatoon on January 9, 2025. Left to mourn is his wife of 54 years, Edna and their children, James (Candy) Hatley and Angela (Jim) Callbeck. Grandchildren, Connor, Isabella and Lucas Hatley; Henry, Colin and Nathan Callbeck. Also left to mourn are his nieces and nephews, Gordon (Bernadette) Kent, Karen (Andy) Richards, Rodney (Deneice) Kent, Linda Tremblay, Beryl Bassman and their families. He was predeceased by his parents, Ethel and Sidney; sisters and brothers-in-law, Joan and Leonard Kent, Elizabeth (Betty) and Eldon Songer; brother, Allen and nephews, Earl and Everett Songer.
