Obituary
It is with heavy hearts that we, the family of Frank Maher, announce his passing at Chancellor Park, on March 2, 2025, age 90, just 5 days short of his 91st birthday.
Predeceased by his parents Bridget (Lake) and William Maher, his infant sister Marie Elizabeth, his previous wife Margaret (Maddox) and partner Phyllis Williams.
Leaving to mourn, his children Marilyn Melay (Gerry), Judy Whitten (Kevin Collier), Bill (Sharon Andrews White), Sheila Shute, Sean (Hilda Marshall), Linda Tulk (Gerry) and Michelle Maher (Larry Young). His grandchildren Suzanne Pennell, Karen Melay, Wayne and Selina Whitten, Billy, Shane, Jessica, and Laura Glasco, Cynthia Shute, Alicia O’Leary, Nicky Matheson and Holly Whiteway. He also has a number of great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.
Dad grew up out at The Battery and started his musical career at an early age. His mother taught him to play the accordion, and he perfected his craft by further learning music by ear. Besides the accordion, he picked up playing the harmonica and tin whistle. He was the manager and long-term bartender at The Harbour Inn on Duckworth Street for 27 years and then went on to play professionally. He was a member of the popular Newfoundland band Figgy Duff that boosted his career in the music industry. This led him to becoming a member of various traditional bands including The Plankerdown Band, Newfoundland Kitchen Band, The Planks, Auntie Crae’s house band, the Mews Centre Accordion Group who played for the Square Dances and many others, including his own band Frank Maher and the Mahers Bahers. He recorded his own CD titled Mahervelous. His music led him to play in various festivals throughout Canada, USA and Europe where he made numerous lifelong friends. His favorite place by far was Ireland, from where his ancestors came.
He was a participant in the Newfoundland Folk Festival for years and in 2003 he was awarded the St. John’s Folk Arts Council Lifetime Achievement Award. He received the Stompin’ Tom Connors award in 2007 at the East Coast Music awards.
Although his music meant the world to him, his greatest achievement was his family. He adored his children and shared his memories with us all. He loved impersonating “Donald Duck” with the little ones. He got a great laugh from that, and the kids loved it!
There is an image of him on the mural at the lower battery and each time we drove by he would say “I haven’t changed a bit”. He was a great trickster and known for his wit and humour. Watch out for that TAP on the shoulder.
To all his friends near and far, thank you for your friendship and support throughout the years. He greatly appreciated each and every one of you and you all brought a smile to his face.
Thanks to Karwood Retirement Retreat for your excellent care over the past three years and to Chancellor Park for your kindness and compassion during his very short stay.
