Celebrating a Life Well Lived
With saddened hearts, we announce the passing of Frances Pauline (Polly) Bennett, who passed away suddenly on Saturday, February 9, 2025 at the age of 95. Polly, as she was affectionately known, was beloved wherever she lived and traveled. She possessed an engaging personality, an exceptional memory of her early years and experiences, and a great sense of humour. Above all, she was a respected friend to everyone she encountered, both home and internationally.
Early Life and Family
Born on May 7,1929 in the Canadian coastal town of Canso, Nova Scotia, she was the eldest of seven siblings to parents, Bill (Biscuit) & Margaret Cohoon. Polly was an exceptional student who excelled in her studies, that led her to becoming a one room schoolteacher at the age of eighteen for all elementary grades, one through eight.
A Dedicated Spouse & Loving Parent
Polly married the love of her life, Russell Bennett, on July 18, 1950, and together moved to Toronto, Ontario to build their family and future. She was a nurturing and dedicated mother to her three children, Gary (Janice) Bennett, Debbie (Jerry) MacDonald and Tim (Sandra) Bennett, whom Russ and Polly raised with unwavering love and guidance.
Career and Contributions
Polly had remarkable careers as an employee of the Robert Simpson Company in downtown Toronto and The Hudson Bay Company, in Burlington, where she was known for her professionalism and kindness. She made significant contributions in the personalized stationery and bridal services departments over many years and was respected by colleagues and clients alike.
Passions and Hobbies
Her greatest passion was her grandchildren, Megan and Kylie (Staats), Jason, Katelyn and Kirsten (Bennett), step granddaughter, Heather (Tang) and Great Grandma to Melina (Staats). She was their champion throughout their lives along with Grandpa Russ.
Polly’s interests and hobbies were many. She loved to swim, play tennis, play cards, read biographies, excel at writing Calligraphy and travel.
Polly and Russ’ enthusiasm for life was handed down to their three kids. Guiding and supportive parents of their education, sports activities, moral and ethical character development, they were also “participarents” to all of their friends. Our house was their house!
Legacy and Remembrance
Polly’s legacy is one of love, kindness, and unwavering dedication to her family and friends. A true Renaissance Person, she will be remembered for her warm smile, her generous spirit, and her ability to make everyone she met feel special. Polly’s impact on the lives of those who knew her is immeasurable, and she will be deeply missed.
Acknowledgements
The family expresses their gratitude to the management and staff at The Chartwell Martha’s Landing Assisted Living Home for their support and care during Polly’s final days. Your kindness and compassion will always be remembered.
The Family would also like to acknowledge the deep friendship Polly shared with David Renouf after she moved to Burlington following her husband’s passing in 2007. Dave and Polly enjoyed an adventurous relationship of travel and companionship. They continued to be dearest friends to the end.
Funeral Arrangements
Plans for a celebration of Polly’s life will be held by the family in the summer.
Polly Bennett’s life was a testament to the power of love, kindness, and strength of self. Though she is no longer with us, her spirit will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know her. She will be forever loved, missed and always remembered.
