REID: Evelyn , passed away suddenly at Kelowna General Hospital with two of her sons by her side on March 9th, 2025 at the age of 87. She was born Evelyn Marie Schmautz to Jacob and Grace Schmautz in Grahamdale, Manitoba, on February 18th, 1938 and lived a life full of love, family, and dedication.
Evelyn married Albert Muzyka and together they built a beautiful family with seven children. She was a devoted mother to Michael, Paul, Kathy, Wendy, Alan, Gary, and John-Paul, always offering unwavering love and support. She was on her way to watch the Brier 2025 in Kelowna with her youngest son John Paul when she had a serious medical event.
She later married Gary Reid of Atikokan and they retired in Emo, Ontario where stock car racing was a part of their lives. After she was widowed, she moved west to Kelowna to live with her sister Vivian, and later they both moved to Orchard Gardens seniors home when complaining about the food was their favourite pastime.
Throughout her life, Evelyn called several places home, including Atikokan and Emo, in NW Ontario, and Kelowna, British Columbia. She worked at Caland Iron Ore Mine where driving a Euclid was one of her jobs, then moved on to the Ontario Power Generation plant as a labourer in Atikokan. She was always known for her hard work and dedication.
When she was young, she had a passion for sports, including baseball, bowling and curling, where she showcased her competitive spirit and love for athletics. When she was on teams she was fondly known as Momma Zeke. During her later life she realized a love of travel. She enjoyed a Caribbean cruise with her son Gary, several visits to Australia with sister Viv to visit family, and a trip to Italy with a good friend.
Evelyn was a beloved sister to Gord Schmautz, Helen Vinkle and Vivian Assels, and had many nieces and nephews, as well as grandchildren and great grandchildren. Evelyn loved spending time with all of them whenever she could. She also really enjoyed being around animals. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who were fortunate to know her.
She was predeceased by her brother Gord, sisters Helen, and Vivian, her daughter Kathy, and sons Paul and Mike.
Cremation has taken place and celebrations will take place soon in Kelowna BC, and in Emo where internment will take place during the summer.
Evelyn’s warmth, strength, and kindness will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved her.
