BABIY, Eugenia –
(October 19, 1935 – January 22, 2025)
With great sorrow, we announce the passing of Eugenia (Joan) Babiy (nee Kotysh), lovingly known as Zhenia. Beloved wife of Yurij Babiy for nearly 56 years. Loving mother of Markian (Tracey), Natalia (Paul) Van Vliet, and Larysa (John) Rodriguez. Devoted and much-loved grandmother to Nicholas, Emma, Matthew, Lucas, Kiera, Maya, Mikaela and Alexa.
Born in Kharkiv, Ukraine to Andrij and Uliana Kotysh in the fall of 1935 she left in 1940 during WWII, moving first to Poland, and then to Germany. After the war she left for Canada with her family and arrived in 1949, eventually making their way to Saskatoon. She moved to Toronto to attend nursing school and graduated from Toronto General Hospital’s nursing program later becoming part of the Victorian Order of Nurses.
She married the love of her life Yurij in 1969, eventually settling in Toronto where they had three children. In Toronto, she and Yurij joined the St. Demetrius Parish where they developed a great group of lifelong friends, known affectionately as the “church gang”. This group became a large part of their social lives, and this provided for many occasions for parties and entertainment. Zhenia was a wonderful cook and known for her tortes. She cherished her Ukrainian heritage, volunteering for many years at the Ukrainian Museum of Canada – Ontario branch, and was a member of various choirs, including the Ukrainian Canadian Opera Company.
She will be remembered by her children and grandchildren, as having a witty sense of humour and most importantly in providing a loving home. She will be greatly missed by all her family and friends.
A special thank you to her caregiver, Olya Terech, for the kind and wonderful care of our mother.
Visitation will be held at NEWEDIUK FUNERAL HOME – KIPLING CHAPEL, 2058 Kipling Avenue, Etobicoke (north of Rexdale Boulevard) on Sunday, January 26th from 5-8 p.m. Panakhyda (prayer service) at 7 p.m. The Funeral will be next at the All Saints of Ukraine Chapel – St. Volodymyr Cultural Centre, 1280 Dundas Street West, Oakville, on Monday, January 27th, 2025, at 10 a.m. Interment to follow at St. Volodymyr Cemetery, Oakville.
