Ethel May Antle Obituary
It is with both a grieving heart and a thankful heart that we lovingly say goodbye to Ethel May Antle. Born 98 years, 6 months, and 1 day ago to Ida May Vatcher and Harold Garland. Mom certainly had a long and full life. Though of small frame, she was not knocked over easily. She was tough. She had grit and a strength likely forged by her early life experiences and a determination to go with it.
Before marrying our dad- Herb in 1949 she worked as a seamstress at the Royal Stores on Water Street. Seventy years ago they moved to Honeymoon Lane in Mount Pearl Park where they lived ever since. There they raised two of us along with dogs, cats, birds. and turtles….and a few goldfish too.
It was in the home that Ethel May became quite industrious using her sewing skills beyond making clothes, tackling many home repairs be they with a hammer, paint brush, flooring or tile knife, and would often create a tool to do a particular job.
And mom was witty. She often came up with one liners which, in time, will be remembered with a story and a smile. Seventeen years ago, Heather Gail and Paul were recovering from surgery and Randy sent some perennials to mark the occasion and mom ended up planting them. Mom would have been 81 at the time. Paul and Heather were looking on as she was on her knees. Looking up she said, “Yes wear out the old ones first!”.
But mom did not wear out first. She was the last of the ”Golden Girls”… a description fondly given by their minister. The other members of the Golden Girls were her neighbours, Mary Trask and Dot Francis, mom was the chauffeur and they would often go to one of their homes for lunch after church.
We thank mom’s good neighbours for their acts of kindness in later years; garbage, snow clearing and baking.
We thank our good friends from near and far for being there for us.
We thank Doctors Harvey and Young whose medical interventions gave mom fifteen extra years with us.
In recent months we have received wonderful home support workers from Serenity. A special thanks to Corrine who was there from the beginning.
In recent weeks we have been so appreciative with the medical care provided by the home palliative care paramedics and other members of the Community Palliative Care Team. Their skill and dedication enabled mom to die at home, the same home where dad also died 29 years ago.
And finally, a fitting prayer for life’s ending.
“Gracious God, support us all the daylong of this earthly life, until the shadows lengthen and the evening comes, the busy world is hushed, the fever of life is over, and our work is done. Then, O God, in your mercy, grant us safe lodging, a holy rest, and peace at the last. Amen.” (The Book of Common Prayer)
Left with “Precious Memories”, her daughter, Heather Gail Buck and her son-in-law Paul, her son, Reverend Randy Antle, her sister, Dorothy Quinton, (brother Gerald died in 2000), her grandchildren: Nicholas Buck and Melissa Bourgeois, her precious great-grandchildren Brandon, Khai, Kadence, Malachy, and Keegan, her cousins, nephews and nieces, and a shrinking number of friends.
Visitation will take place at Barrett’s Funeral Home, 73 Commonwealth Ave, Mount Pearl, on Monday, June 23 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. A Celebration of Life will follow on Tuesday, June 24, 2 pm at First United Church, Mount Pearl.
