It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Erwin Stewart Nelson, who died peacefully on March 22, 2025, in his 94th year.
He will be lovingly remembered by his daughters, Kathy (David) Angus and Sarah Wildman (Bill Meyer), his Grandchildren and Great-Grandchildren. Predeceased by his wife of 42 years, Florence (1994), daughter Beth (2011), Scott (2022), grandchildren: Marissa Nelson and Connor Flynn Wildman, and by his 2nd wife, Barb (2013).
Erwin was born on June 30, 1931, in Chesley, Ontario to Erwin and Nellie Nelson. He graduated Grade 12 from Chesley High School and went on to apprentice at H.K Stager Funeral Home in Preston. Licensed as a Funeral Director in 1952. He married the love of his life, Florrie.
Over the years, he worked in Welland, Brantford and Stratford before buying the Nelson Funeral Home in Hespeler in 1957 where he remained until retiring in 1996. And, still continuing to work for the new owner, Dale Lounsbury, as needed until 2017.
Once settled in Hespeler, Erwin managed minor hockey teams in Hespeler, joined the Kiwanis Club and followed his passion for politics. He held positions as a School Board Trustee 1958, Reeve of Hespeler 1959, 1962-1971, Cambridge Alderman 1973 – 1976, Mayor of Cambridge 1977-1979, Regional Council 1975-1976 and taking a run for the local PC Party.
In 1972, Erwin became the President of the newly established Board of Directors for Saint Luke’s Place. It was his dream to build a facility that would take care of the elders in the community. For the past 25 years, he lived in the facility. First in the apartments, and recently, moving to A-Wing. He was excited to hear the facility was expanding and was eager to see the construction begin.
In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to be made to the Saint Luke’s Place Building Fund to continue Erwin’s dream.
