Erica Hilda Helena Bouhénic of Toronto/Orono ON died on January 9, 2025, at home.
She was born on April 1, 1942, to Hermance and Jan Willem Buykes in Stratford ON.
Erica attended the University of Toronto and became a High School Teacher of English.
She met the love of her life, her devoted husband Jean-Claude while on vacation in Paris, France and they had one daughter, Dr. Gabrielle (Alex) Ledger and two beautiful granddaughters – Amelia and Briar.
Erica loved literature, nature, animals, gardening, snorkeling, sailing and her friends Elin and Margaret. She enjoyed very much the years she spent at Glendon College where Jean-Claude was Dean of Students, as well as several beautiful sabbaticals spent in the South of France.
Erica is survived by her older brother Jack Buykes and her niece Heidi (Howard) Hilderbrand and nephew Jeff (Kim) Buykes. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother John Buykes.
Erica was a lifelong philosopher and believer in euthanasia but was denied the peaceful passing she desired due to systematic underfunding of the health care system resulting inadequate time to arrange MAiD. Her family are eternally grateful to her nurse Rachel in the ICU and her friend Dr. Adriana Palencar.
In lieu of a funeral, a Celebration of Life will take place in the Spring. Memorial donations may be made to Animal Justice.
