Emily Fitzgerald Obituary
Emily Josephine (Hogan) Fitzgerald March 4, 1944 – February 6, 2025
We sadly said farewell to our mother on February 6, 2025 at the Cape Breton regional Hospital in Sydney. At the age of 80, and surrounded by her children, Emily took her last breath. She departed this world to join her parents, Frank and Irene (Rogers) Hogan, a sister Nina, a brother Billy and beloved grandson, Andrew Fitzgerald.
Emily was born in New Waterford and grew up in Neil’s Harbour. She married at the age of 19 to John David Fitzgerald of Bay Road Valley and settled in Sugar Loaf to begin raising their family. She was employed at the Highland Lodge and the Markland in Dingwall for many years, as well as being the only hitchhiking AVON salesperson North of Smokey. That is a whole story on its own for another time. Just know that Emily’s selfless nature inspired her to put others’ needs before her own. Eventually, Emily’s longing for more music and adventure took her to the Sydney area where she could often be found singing with her sister Janet on the Boardwalk or dancing the evenings away at the KOC. She was an avid volunteer as well as a very proud Legion member.
With a heart full of kindness and a spirit that sparkled like the brightest star, Emily touched the lives of everyone she met. She was well known throughout the years for her unwavering kindness for every soul she met. Her unshakable faith in God was infectious and she always considered herself blessed to have what she had. Her presence in our lives was a blessing and her passing leaves a void that could never be filled. Emily loved her grandchildren fiercely and truly devoted her life to them. Her heart was pure and children knew that about her. She always made each and everyone of them feel special.
Left here on earth to mourn Emily are her 6 children; David (Mary), Kenny (Nancy), Edward (Joanne), George (Andrea), Ronnie (April), Norma Jean (Leonard). Her sixteen grandchildren; Dolores, Samantha, David, Kaylee, Gracie, Ella, Jacob, William, Emily, Katie, Tyler, Tiffany, Becky, Johnny, Joshua and Kelsey. Thirteen Great-grandchildren; Dustin, Fabian, Karter, George, Jayce, Mason, Cali, Zyah, Ira, Parker, Madalynn, Connor, and Jaxon. Also left behind is her sister Janet (Sydney Mines) and a brother Francis (Marilyn) of Neil’s Harbour.
Special thanks to Norma Jean, Leonard, Becky and Kelsey for taking special care of Mom the past couple of years. She was blessed to have you all. Also, to her special sister-in-law Bernadette for her unwavering support throughout a lifetime.
For those of you who would like to celebrate Emily’s life or extend condolences there will be a visitation held at Jm Jobes Funeral Home at 635 Main St., Sydney Mines from 1pm -3pm on Saturday February 22, 2025. Immediately following the visitation, a brief service will be held. The family is hosting a reception which will be held at the Sydney Mines Legion following the service. All are welcome, as Emily loved nothing better than chatting over tea and sweets. A burial will be held later in Spring as cremation has already taken place.
“A Wife, a mother, a grandma too,
This is the legacy we have from you
You taught us love and how to fight
You gave us strength, you gave us might.
A stronger person would be hard to find,
And in your heart you were always kind.
You fought for us all in one way or another
Not just as a wife, not just as a mother.
For all of us you gave your best
And now the time has come for you to rest.
So go in peace, you’ve earned your sleep,
Your love in our hearts we’ll eternally keep.”
