Ella Martin Obituary
Ella (Øli) Martin (née Knutson), longtime resident of Penticton, BC, passed away peacefully at The Hamlets at Penticton on February 27, 2025 at the age of 100.
She was born in Åmli, Norway on December 15, 1924. With her family, she immigrated to Canada in 1934, homesteading near Porcupine Plain, Saskatchewan. As a young girl in school, her teacher recommended she change her name to something more English-Canadian. Øli proposed “Cinderella”. Her teacher suggested that perhaps “Ella” might be more appropriate.
Having lost her mother at an early age, Ella grew to be an enterprising young woman, working at various jobs including telephone operator (in Birch Hills, Saskatchewan, under the guidance of Kari Grambo); WW2 munitions factory worker (in Toronto); receptionist at the Georgia Hotel (in Vancouver); and fishing camp cook (in Ucluelet).
Ella was an avid reader and an excellent gardener. A photo of her resplendent patio flowers was once featured in the Penticton Herald. She loved to travel and spent time in various locations in the United States, the Caribbean, and Europe. A free-spirited, fun-loving, kind and thoughtful person, Ella always welcomed visitors to her home with generous hospitality.
Ella was predeceased by her parents, brothers Halvard (Jean) Knutson and Jerry (Eunice) Knutson, and her husband, Ron Martin. Left to mourn her loss are her sister Marie (Donald) Bristol of Penticton, and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Ella’s family would like to thank the kind and caring staff of The Hamlets at Penticton.
