It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Elizabeth Anne Payne (née Kaufman) on Friday, March 14, 2025, at Freeport Hospital, surrounded by her loved ones. She was just one month shy of her 83rd birthday.
Liz was the loving mother of Richard, his wife Laurraine, and Edward, and a devoted grandmother to Sarah (Ronan) and Jessica (Marcelo). She was a cherished sister to Jim (Cathy) and sister-in-law to Nancy (Ken). She will be fondly remembered by her nieces and nephews— Jay, Tristin, Amanda, Daniel, and Diana. She was also a beloved “Gordmother” to Gordon Dowling and a close family friend to Michael Dowling.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Howard Payne, her parents, Genevieve and Wilfrid Kaufman, and her brother, John Kaufman.
Liz was born on Waterloo Street in Waterloo, Ontario. She attended St. Louis Parish and School before continuing her education at St. Mary’s High School. She began her teaching career at just 17 years old and, while raising her family, worked tirelessly to earn a political science degree from the University of Waterloo—one of her proudest accomplishments.
A woman of boundless generosity and kindness, Liz saw the good in everyone. She dedicated much of her life to serving her community, volunteering extensively with the House of Friendship, acting as a house parent at St. Agatha Children’s Village, organizing roadside cleanups to help protect the environment, and tirelessly advocating for women’s rights. Family was incredibly important to her, and she maintained close relationships with her extended family and cherished every gathering.
Liz’s friendships were just as dear to her as family. Some of her fondest memories included time spent with the “Old Fools,” spoiling her grandchildren, playing bingo at the Terrace, and participating in her many book clubs over the years. She was a remarkable woman who will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving her.
A heartfelt thank you to the doctors and nurses on the 6th floor of Grand River Hospital, the palliative care team at Freeport Hospital, and the staff and residents at Chartwell Terrace on the Square for their care and companionship over the past six years. Liz was truly grateful for the friendships she made along the way. The family also extends their deepest appreciation to all her dearest family and friends who visited her in her final days.
Visitation will be held at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo on Thursday, March 20, 2025 from 9 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. The funeral service will be held in the chapel of the funeral home on Thursday at 11 a.m., immediately following the visitation. A reception will be held in the funeral home’s Fireside Reception Room.
A livestream and recording of the service will made available on Elizabeth’s tribute page at www.erbgood.com Cremation has taken place and a private family interment will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the House of Friendship, Kitchener, would be greatly appreciated and may be arranged through the funeral home at www.erbgood.com or 519-745-8445.
