Elizabeth Miriam Watton Obituary
Elizabeth Miriam Watton (née Cull)
October 16,1944 – March 12, 2025
Passed peacefully at Pleasant View Towers in St. John’s, on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, Elizabeth Miriam Watton (née Cull), age 80. Elizabeth was born in Toronto and raised in Ontario, Nova Scotia and, eventually, Newfoundland where she graduated from Holy Heart of Mary High School. She went on to complete post secondary studies, enabling her to embark on a career in microbiology and lab technology. Shortly after completing her studies, she accepted a job at Western Memorial Hospital in Corner Brook. It was on the west coast where she met the love of her life, her husband Maxwell Watton. They welcomed their first daughter, Caroline, in Corner Brook, and shortly after moved to St. John’s where their daughters Melissa and Rebecca were born.
Elizabeth loved science, teaching and her students at the Trades College where she taught until her retirement. She would often delight in conversation at the grocery store, mall and on neighbourhood walks when students would approach her to say hello. While her family knew her as somewhat shy, when she met her students her love of teaching and joy of interacting with them showed her daughters and loved ones how she cherished this part of her life, so inspiring her daughters to pursue their interests and careers.
Upon retirement she welcomed her first of seven grandchildren, and embraced being a grandmother with love, delight and wisdom. She joyed in helping her daughters; looked forward to playing, reading and baking with her grandkids; and, would always lend an attentive ear to family.
Since 2017, Elizabeth was cared for with great experience and love by her nurses and nursing staff at Pleasant View Towers on 3SE and 4NE. Pleasant View Towers was truly a home where attention and care welcomed her beyond her 80th birthday.
Predeceased by husband, Maxwell; parents Audrey (née Floyd) and James Albert Cull; parents-in-law Caroline (Carrie) (née Batten) and Reginald Watton; and brother, James. Leaving to mourn, but sharing many wonderful years of beautiful memories, are her daughters Caroline (Kevin Kiley), Melissa (Paul Jackman) and Rebecca Hefferton (Stephen) and grandchildren Cameron and Holly Dunn; Alec and Maxwell Jackman; and Harrison, Ava and Abigail Hefferton. She also leaves to mourn her sisters Cathy Walsh, Christine Cull and Roseanne Wade; sister-in law Lillian Bussey (Edward); and brothers-in law Calvin Watton (Cindy), Wayne Watton (Marilyn), and Graham Watton (Katie), as well as many nieces and nephews.
Cremation has taken place. A funeral service will be held on Monday, March 17 at 11 a.m. at Barrett’s Memorial Chapel, 328 Hamilton Avenue, St. John’s. The service will be livestreamed. We rise again in the faces of our children
We rise again in the voices of our song
We rise again in the waves out on the ocean
And then we rise again
