Elizabeth “Kathleen” Stuart Obituary
The family of Kathleen are saddened to share news of her death on Feb. 3, 2025 in Portage la Prairie, MB. For nearly eight months she faced sudden, serious illness head-on with tenacity, acceptance and her signature brand of humour intact. She passed peacefully in the comfort of her home with loved ones by her side. Kathleen was born Nov. 26, 1962 in Thompson, MB; she was 62.
Predeceased by her parents John and Elizabeth Nagy (2012, 2015), infant sister Elizabeth (1956) brothers Leslie, John Jr. and Lloyd Nagy (2003, 2017, 2017) and her loyal and cherished dog Sadie (2023), Kathleen is survived, loved and remembered by her daughter Stephanie (DeSchutter) Moski (Michael) of Winnipeg, sister Susan Thomte (Robert), nephews/niece Christopher, Adam and Raechel Thomte along with their beautiful, growing families, all from North Dakota. Her presence is greatly missed by her friends, colleagues and many community acquaintances; her cats Albus and Kitty and Grand-dog Charlie are certainly missing her scritches and treats.
In her childhood years Kathleen grew up moving around Canada; her parents had come from Hungary, eventually settling near Beausejour, MB. She enjoyed summer trips with her folks and siblings and made friends in school and Hungarian dance classes. She graduated from Edward Schreyer School in 1980, soon making her way back north to Thompson where she became a mother to her only child – a baby girl, Stephanie – in 1986. Kathleen enjoyed being a Mom and spending time with family and friends. She played in bowling leagues, cheered Steph on at sporting events and loved to get dressed-up and looking her best both for work and on her own time. She loved to sleep-in on weekends, gossip over coffee and cigarettes, to laugh, swear and tell dirty jokes. She liked loud music and dancing – she’d rock a mean Macarena in ’95 and beyond – and rarely held back her strong opinions or suffered any fools.
Kathleen worked several years for Scotiabank in a variety of locations, eventually landing in her long-term community of Portage la Prairie in ‘97. She could be found working the Terrier’s ticket booth at the old arena or other part-time jobs to make extra spending cash and meet folks in town. By 2002 she’d accepted her government position as Office Clerk at Manitoba Housing Authority, from where she’d hoped to eventually retire. During her 20+ years of service at Housing, Kathleen became a reliable, walking encyclopedia of knowledge. She knew the ins and outs and who’s who of tenants and vendors and was a big help to those working with her. She often contributed to the successes of the office and took pride in doing a great job while helping others to do the same.
Kathleen enjoyed being in the company of others and was always happy to tag-along for an adventure. She’d look forward to spending weekends with Stephanie in Winnipeg – going to many amazing concerts, hockey or football games or trying new things like float tanks or cold plunges. She’d excitedly await the next visit with her “baby sister” Sue in Fargo, and had tons of fun celebrating the weddings and babies of her nephews and niece. Kathleen was thrilled to be a Great Aunty (“Graunty”) to so many cute kiddos and lived vicariously through her sister’s experience of being a Grandma. It was a particular highlight for her in recent months, when her Great Niece Avery could come visit and share her artwork and stories with her.
Often alone but rarely lonely, Kathleen enjoyed her own company and honoured her alone time. Restful weekends spent at home to indulge in creature comforts really put her at ease. She was a homebody, but had come to love the luxury of escaping parts of winter to Mexico, even traveling solo a few times to soak up some sun on the beach. She had fun playing the lottery, Kinsmen Jackpot Bingo and entering various radio or TV contests – she’d won a surprising number of concert tickets and cash prizes over the years and liked including others in the fun along with her. She loved to get her hair and nails done, dog-sit her Grand-dogs, and get out for long walks with her own cherished pup, Sadie. Sadie was such a blessing in Kathleen’s life and they’d often chat with people on their walks and end the day’s journey with a special stop for ice cream. Losing Sadie really affected Kathleen profoundly; it’s sad to be without them both now, but comforting to envision them together out walking once more.
Kathleen was a loving, loyal daughter and care-giver to both her parents in their final years and certainly set an example for what it can look like to help care for loved ones in need to the best of one’s ability. Seeing her show up to do hard things certainly helped guide the desire and ability for family to do the same for her when adversity came knocking. We’re grateful for the person that she was and we’ll carry her and our family of Angels with us as we keep on living and loving life in their memory.
Kathleen’s family extend their gratitude and appreciation to the entire Southern Health Home Care, Palliative and CancerCare teams, Dr. Nelson and all Medical Ward staff at PDGH and the kind-hearted friends, co-workers and Sunset P.C. volunteers who continually checked-in and spent the time they could. Thanks as well to Ronald Moffit Memorial Services, and those who have extended thoughts and love during this time.
A celebration of Kathleen’s life will be held at a later date; if you’d like to be notified of further details, please reach out to Stephanie directly or email CelebrateKathleen62@gmail.com to be informed.
