It is with great sadness that we
announce the passing of our mother, Elizabeth
“Betty” Jane Casey, age 84, of Truro, NS,
formerly of Port Howe, NS. Mom passed away peacefully with us (her two
daughters) by her side on Tuesday, January, 21, 2025 at CedarStone
Enhanced Care Home in Truro.
Born in Springhill, NS, Mom was a
daughter of the late George and Adelaide (Thompson)
Smith.
In 1958 Mom married the love of her
life, Don Casey, and so continued their relationship of love,
friendship and partnership that lasted nearly 60 years until
Dad’s death in 2018. Together they raised us in Port Howe
and Amherst, NS.
Most of Mom’s married life she
was a homemaker, however she did work outside the home for a number of
years at Lockhart’s Nursing Home (later Gables Lodge) as a
CPW and then as the head cook. She enjoyed the residents immensely and
made many lasting friendships. But her most important roles were that
of wife, mother (including grand & greatgrand), sister (it
would be hard to find a group of siblings closer than Mom’s)
and aunt.
While Mom had a strong work ethic and
was a great believer in discipline and respect, she was also
affectionate and caring. There was no shortage of praise, and hugs and
kisses for her loved ones. And, she was something of a ‘baby
whisperer’. Many a time she was heard to say,
‘Give me that baby’ and she would coax out that
last burp or settle the little whimpers.
And, she was always
‘there’. She was the one who gave you the little
nudge out the door when you really didn’t want to go; met
you with hugs and endearments when your heart was broken; and provided
the unconditional love and support needed when you really did mess
up.
In addition to this, Mom was a maker.
She sewed, knit and did needle work, but her real love was cultivating
food and sharing it with others. She loved to garden with Dad and they
would pickle and can their bounty every fall. So it’s no
surprise she was an amazing cook and baker. Knowing most of her best
recipes by touch and feel, she would bristle when asked for a recipe
because she didn’t precisely measure much. Being raised on a
farm and near the seaside Mom could prepare a scrumptious roast of
salmon as easily as a roast of beef, or for more casual fare,
‘fry up a mess of smelts’ or prepare a
‘feed of lobster’, her favourite. And, oh the
pies, three or four would be at the ready so everyone enjoyed a
favourite. And she could make candy like nobody’s business, no candy
thermometer needed; the divinity fudge would melt in your
mouth.
With her love of making and family, Mom
was happiest when her home was full of family, immediate and extended,
enjoying her and Dad’s garden veggies, a yummy roast, her
sought after mustard pickles and pie. The day no doubt would end with
a few chuckles and several hands of 45s or crib.
We will dearly miss our mother,
grandmother, great grandmother, sister and aunt. We are: daughters,
Joanne (Jeff) Robar, Nine Mile River, NS and Lynn (John) Mee, Saint
John, NB; grandson; David (Nicole) Robar, Goffs, NS; granddaughters,
Jenna (Alex Aube) Robar, Nine Mile River, NS, Allison (Devan
Gunaseelan) Mee, Woodstock, NB, and Maggie Mee, Saint John, NB; great
grandchildren, Maeve and Will Robar and Ira Mee-Gunaseelan; sisters
Georgina Angus, Amherst, NS and Diane (Donald) MacPherson, Eastern
Passage, NS; and many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, Mom was predeceased
by her husband Donald; granddaughter Emily Mee; sisters, Hulda, Sandra
(in childhood) and Nellie; brother, Murray.
Arrangements have been entrusted to
