Elfrieda was born November 26, 1925 in Gortschakowa, Russia to Heinrich and Justina Siemens. At age 4, she immigrated to Canada, via Germany with her parents and sister Katie. The Siemens family settled in Gem, AB where Elfrieda grew up and lived until 2001. At age 11, after hearing her mother read from Scripture about the future return of CHRIST, she realized her unready, sinful state and trusted JESUS as her SAVIOUR. She was later baptized in 1943 and became a member of the Gem M.B. Church where she joined the youth group, sang in the choir, and taught Sunday School. After just beginning grade 9, it became necessary for Elfrieda to stop attending school, allowing her to help sustain the family by working at home and for people in the community. Later, she was able to attend Bible School for two years in Gem and one year in Coaldale. During this time, she also became quite an accomplished seamstress, sewing several wedding gowns for peers and later for daughters, nieces, and grandchildren. On June 24, 1951, Elfrieda was married to Peter Plett and they became a hard-working team, on the farm, in the Gem M.B. Church, in the community, as well as in many other capacities. Together they raised six children: Lillian, Verna, Alvin, Donald, Ernest, and Steven, in a loving, Godly home. In July 2001, Peter and Elfrieda moved to the Prince of Peace Village in Calgary and became faithful members of the Highland M.B. Church. Ten years later, Elfrieda’s life encountered a dramatic change with the death of her dear husband, Peter. With GOD’s help, she courageously dealt with the intense loneliness and learned many new life skills which her husband had previously looked after for her. Elfrieda was blessed with many cherished friends in her church and community. She, in turn, blessed them with her cheerful smile and genuine interest in their lives. She was always a very creative, industrious, frugal woman who was gifted in a great variety of handcrafts which she liberally shared with family, friends, neighbours, MCC, etc. Her life focus was to busily help others. She would often engage in friendly conversation with complete strangers and especially delighted in children. In September 2024, Elfrieda’s health began to decline quite suddenly, and she was diagnosed with End Stage Kidney Failure which necessitated her move to Dulcina Hospice on November 19, where her longing desire to be with JESUS was fulfilled shortly after 8:00 A.M. on December 20, 2024. Elfrieda was predeceased by her husband, Peter, in 2011 and by her daughter-in-law, Angela, in 2022. She is survived by her children, Lillian (David) Westcott; Verna (Kevin) Isley; Alvin Plett; Don (Elma) Plett; Ernie (Verna) Plett and Steve (Denise) Plett; 28 grandchildren, and 22 (soon to be 24) great grandchildren. She also leaves behind her sister, Ruth; brother, George; numerous brothers and sisters-in-law, and many nieces and nephews. Elfrieda took a keen interest in the personal life of each family member and will be deeply missed by her family which she lovingly delighted in and faithfully prayed for. Graveside services were held on Sunday, December 22 at the Gem Cemetery. Pastor Steve Driedeger officiating. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, January 4, 2025 at 2:30 PM at the Highland Mennonite Brethren Church, 4018 Centre B Street NW, Calgary T2K 0W2 wwwhighlandchurch.ca.
The Memorial service will be live-streamed by the Highland Brethren Mennonite Church.
