It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Eleanore Ross on Wednesday, March 5, 2025 in her 90th year.
Eleanore May (Arthurs) Ross, the daughter of Fred and Ellena (Chambers) Arthurs was born on August 9, 1935 and grew up on a farm near Drew, Ontario. She married Bert Ross in 1958 and together they raised their family and operated their dairy farm for over 47 years Eleanore and Bert moved to Harriston in 2005. A couple of years after Bert’s passing in 2019, Eleanore moved to Caressant Care Retirement Home in Harriston, where she lived until February, 2025.
Eleanore is survived by her children Dale & Tami Ross, and Gary & Wendy Ross, all of Minto, Deanna & John Quintieri of Caledon, and Brent Ross & Adele Campbell of Harriston.
Eleanore was the much-loved grandmother to Kevin & Lauren Ross, Amanda & Andrew Roantree, Nicole Ross, Greg Ross, Karisa & Patrick Downey, Kody Ross & Alyse Bramhill, Keaton & Jacinda Ross, Kyle Quintieri, Andrew Quintieri, Ellena Ross, and Vivian Ross, and will be remembered by her great-grandchildren Kane, Zoe, Raelyn, Delbert, Wes, Jack, Logan, and Carter.
Sister of Glen Arthurs of Harriston, Bob Arthurs & Sue Harcus of Red Deer, AB, and Jean & Richard Kado of Oakville, and sister-in-law of Phyllis Romphf of Barrie.
Predeceased by her husband Bert Ross, parents Fred and Ellena (Chambers) Arthurs, great-grandson Evan Ross, brother Jim Arthurs, and sisters-in-law Betty Arthurs and Flo Arthurs. Also predeceased by Bert’s brothers and sister-in-laws Allan & Lily Ross, Gordon & Dorothy Ross, Lloyd & Shirley Ross, Ralph & Margaret Ross, and Bert’s brother-in-law Gilbert Romphf.
Eleanore was a strong, sensible woman who loved her family and her community. After graduating from high school, Eleanore went to Summer School to become a teacher, and began teaching in a one room school house right out of high school. She went to Teacher’s College a couple of years later and continued teaching until her second son was born. While she “retired” from teaching to raise her family, the teacher in Eleanore remained all of her life, especially making sure that her children used proper grammar ALL the time.
Eleanore loved living on the farm, being a farmer’s wife, preparing meals, and especially baking pies. It was always special when her grandchildren came to visit. Her community was very important to Eleanore. As a young woman, she coached her sons’ baseball teams, was an active member of the Cotswold United Church Women and volunteered with the Harriston Agricultural Society. In later years, she volunteered at the Palmerston Hospital and at the Long-Term Care Home.
Eleanore and Bert were happy together and enjoyed life. They both enjoyed community events, curling, dances, lawn bowling and euchre parties. Once they semi-retired, they enjoyed travelling to many places within Canada. She will be greatly missed.
Visitation will be held at the Hardy-Lee Funeral Home, Harriston on Sunday from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.
The funeral service will be held at Harriston United Church on Monday, March 10 at 11:00 a.m. The service will be live-streamed.
