Edward Belitsky, a cherished husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on March 4, 2025, at Oakville Trafalgar Hospital. He was born on January 14, 1932, on the family farm outside of Canora, Saskatchewan, to Steve and Josephine Biletsky.
Edward’s early life was steeped in the values of hard work and family. In 1933, his family moved to a farm in the Port Pelly district, returning to the Canora area in 1940. Following his graduation from Moose Jaw Normal Teachers College in 1951, he began a dedicated teaching career in the Hampton Springside area, where he taught for a decade. His passion for education laid a strong foundation for his family and for those whose lives he touched as an educator.
On November 19, 1955, Edward married Eleanor Samuels in Canora, Saskatchewan. Together, they welcomed two children: son Steven Samuel Belitsky, born in 1956, and daughter Judith Lynn Belitsky, born in 1957. Edward’s devotion to his family was evident in the love and support he provided throughout their lives.
In 1960, Edward made a significant career change, becoming the editor of the Canora Courier. His passion for journalism continued when, in 1967, he relocated his family to Ontario to take on the role of Editor of the Mississauga News. His career flourished as he took on the editorship of Canadian Automotive Trade for McLean Hunter, and later, he owned his own magazine Car Mag. Edward also freelanced articles during his retirement and was proud to have received the prestigious Silver Quill award for his outstanding contributions to writing. He had the opportunity to interview numerous notable figures, including astronaut John Glenn.
Edward’s adventures extended beyond his career. He and Eleanor traveled extensively, exploring destinations such as Spain, Africa, Monaco, Hawaii, and various locations throughout the United States. These experiences enriched their lives and strengthened their bond.
A man of diverse interests, Edward found joy in gardening, fishing, reading, and taking long walks. He also had a talent for building furniture, which showcased his creativity and craftsmanship.
Edward was predeceased by his father, Steve Biletsky, in 1960; his mother, Josephine Biletsky, in 1990; 2 brothers Paul and Albert and sister Olga his granddaughter, Bianca Rietman in 2005. He is survived by his loving wife, Eleanor Belitsky; daughter Judi Rietman; grandson Taylor Louiseize; and son Steven Belitsky.
Edward Belitsky will be remembered for his indomitable spirit, his commitment to family, and his contributions to journalism and education. His legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew him and were touched by his kindness and wisdom.
