Dr. Marlene Bloom, a prominent, well known dentist, passed away on Saturday, February 22, 2025, at the age of 86, following a hard-fought battle with cancer. She was born in Port Arthur on March 29, 1938.
Marlene attended Port Arthur Collegiate and continued her studies at Queen’s University where she completed her undergraduate degree, majoring in chemistry. She worked for National Defence in Ottawa, as a chemist. After working for 2 years, Marlene decided to follow her life-long dream of becoming a dentist. She attended the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Toronto where she was one of 3 women in her graduating class. When Marlene returned to Thunder Bay, she was the first female dentist to open a practice . She was dedicated to her profession, always up to date on the current best practices, by taking endless courses, which lead to the development of a state-of-the-art building that incorporated all the newest ideas, features and technology. This became part of her legacy and vision to provide a first class experience, at a time when few would take the risk. She earned the utmost respect of her colleagues and those that follow in her footsteps.
Marlene was proud of her Finnish heritage and fortunate to have learned the Finnish language from her parents which she used to communicate with her Finnish patients and her relatives in Finland. Summers were filled with entertaining family and friends, at Crystal Beach, relaxing, reading and gardening. Her Finnish relatives thoroughly enjoyed their stays at Crystal Beach when they visited Thunder Bay. She had many interests including politics, the stock market and playing duplicate bridge. While hospitalized, she could be seen with her iPad in hand searching the news and following the stock market. Through her love of bridge, Marlene met her husband John Dagsvik. Together they loved travelling to tournaments and enjoyed bridge cruises.
Thank you to the doctors and nurses at the Thunder Bay Regional and St. Joseph’s Hospitals for their exceptional care and compassion shown to Marlene. Special thanks to Drs Chan and Bezanson and nurses and support staff Jocelyn, Tammy, Sherri and Jill.
Marlene was always grateful to Lorraine Smith and her dog Georgie. She looked forward to their visits at home and later at the hospital. Georgie provided endless entertainment and comfort to Marlene.
Marlene is survived by her sister Marjorie, step sons Mark (Joanne), Bruce (Linda), Peter, sister-in-law Ila Dagsvik, brothers-in-law Haakon Dagsvik, Cam Fergusson, nieces and nephews and numerous relatives in Finland.
Marlene was predeceased by her husband John Dagsvik, mother and father Saima and Waino Bloom, in-laws Kelly and John Dagsvik, sisters-in-law Sally Fergusson, Helen Dagsvik and brother-in-law Perry Dagsvik.
Cremation has taken place. As per Marlene’s request, there will be no formal service. There will be a celebration of life at a later date. In lieu of flowers, a donation to a charity of your choice is appreciated. Online condolences may be expressed at www.sargentandson.com.
