Dr. Georgie Chalker, surgeon, sailor, traveller, lover of animals and old houses, passed away on February 15, 2025 after a short illness.
Georgie was predeceased by her parents George and Mercedes (Dunphy) Chalker, brother-in-law Thomas Burke and her dear friend Karen Pritchett.
Leaving with many wonderful memories her sisters Mary Chalker and Dorothy Burke, brother George Chalker, niece Brigid Burke, nephew Paddy Burke (Tracey), and their children Jack and Clara, her cousin Ted Hiscock, other cousins and many friends.
Georgie was born in Twillingate in 1944, delivered by Dr. Olds. She attended Bishop Spencer College and later won a three year scholarship to study medicine at Queen’s University. She graduated in 1968. After a year of general practice in Channel – Port – aux Basque she left to pursue further studies in England at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and Great Ormond Street in London. After two years she returned to Memorial to finish her surgical studies. She then moved back to Twillingate to pursue her dream of practicing medicine in the hospital where she was born. As well as surgery, she delivered many babies. She enjoyed 18 wonderful years in Twillingate and made many friends. When changes in the medical system meant she had to leave she moved to Clarenville where she finished her career and made more wonderful friends.
She enjoyed many summers on the water in Notre Dame and Bonavista Bays, in her Twillingate speedboat and sailboat. Her travels took her all over Europe and North America and as far as South Africa and Australia.
After her retirement Georgie spent many hours supporting St Thomas’s Church and Emmaus House Food Bank, where she made another circle of good friends.
Georgie lived a life full of service and enjoyment. She was an example to us all. She will be missed dearly.
Visitation will be held at Carnell’s Funeral Home on Sunday March 2 from 2 to 4 pm and 7 to 9 pm. The funeral service will be held at St Thomas’s Church on Monday March 3 at 2 pm.
