It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Douglas McHolm, who left us suddenly on Sunday, February 2, 2025, in Port Maitland, Nova Scotia at the age of 89 years young. Doug was born on December 16, 1935, in Weston, Ontario, and lived a life marked by adventure, love, and an abundance of lifelong friendships.
Doug was predeceased by his wife, Irene in 2017, and leaves behind his loving daughters, Laura (Pat), Becky (Wayne), and his brother David (Josie). He was a remarkably proud grandfather to Rachel, Hilary, Olivia, and Sullivan and a cherished uncle to Karen, Michael (McHolm), and Rick, Dan (Pillar). He will be sadly missed by his loving companion Anna Chisholm and her daughters Maryann and Melissa.
Doug had a distinguished career in the Insurance industry, dedicating many years to Morden and Helwig Limited before retiring. Retirement brought Doug valuable time to enjoy the things he loved most. He treasured adventures across North America in his RV with his late wife and their beloved German Shepherds. After Irene’s passing, Doug continued his travels, opting for a smaller RV, for himself and his loyal pup, Inde. For those who knew Doug well, it was the little things in life that brought him the greatest happiness – a stunning sunset, a freshly baked rhubarb pie, a perfectly grilled steak, and a glass of exceptional single malt scotch.
In the summer of 2021, Doug moved down East, where he rekindled a long-standing friendship with Anna, ultimately finding love and happiness together. While Doug often missed his friends and family back home, he lived out his final years filled with companionship in the beautiful seaside community of Port Maitland.
Doug faced significant mobility issues in his later years, but he never allowed them to slow him down. These challenges were handled with new equipment, often accompanied by some enjoyable accessories. He was frequently seen at the beach on his ATV and loved sending his family back home photos of his excursions. As we remember his resilience, let us remind ourselves to strive to do the same and live life to its fullest.
Doug will be fondly remembered by his family and many friends for his vibrant spirit, kind heart, and compassionate nature. His adventurous spirit will continue to inspire everyone to appreciate the small joys in life and the warmth of connection.
In place of flowers, please raise a glass of your finest scotch to honour a life well lived and the cherished memories we hold dear.
