Obituary of Dorothy Loretta (Petrie) Scott, Mira Road
It is with the greatest love and cherished memories that we announce the passing of our beautiful Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother, Dorothy Loretta (Petrie) Scott at the remarkable age of 91 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Dorothy passed away on February 21, 2025, leaving behind a lasting impression of warmth, love and kindness.
Born in New Waterford on June 3rd, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Patrick and Amanda (Schroeder) Petrie.
She was predeceased by her husband Raymond, son Michael, brothers Earl, Johnny, Wallace, Rudy, and Russel and her sisters, Jackie and Amelia. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Dorothy is survived by her loving son Bernard Scott, daughter Cheryl (Gerald) Gillis, grandchildren, Michael (Valerie) Scott, Ashley (Scott) Hillier, Lacey Scott and Lisa Scott and her 6 great-grandchildren, Erik, Ethan, Eli, Mike, Seamus and Kurt. She is also survived by her nieces and nephews.
In her early years Mom was a home maker who enjoyed the outdoors whether it was gardening, walking, camping, swimming or just sitting in the sun. She spent a lot of time volunteering with many campaigns including the restoral of Fort Petrie where she played a vital role in raising money for upgrades. Mom also spent a lot of time at Beaton Institute searching genealogy and adding to her family tree which she thoroughly enjoyed.
Mom’s life gained a whole new purpose when she became a grandmother. There was no love like the love she had for her grandchildren. She absolutely loved watching them grow up and spent every day of their childhood with Ashley and Michael whether it was jumping on the bus to head to Sydney or camping in PEI together. Mom also loved to travel to BC to visit her twin granddaughters, Lisa and Lacey to spend as much time with them as she could. As a grandmother, she showered them with unconditional love, support and knowledge. Her warm smile, gentle touch, and listening ear could always soothe those around her and her love was a safe haven where we could always find peace, comfort, and warmth.
As we mourn the loss of this extraordinary woman, we take comfort in the many memories of her love, her laughter, and her unwavering support for us – her family. Her spirit will continue to inspire us, and guide us to live with greater kindness, compassion, and generosity.
“If there ever comes a time where we cannot be together, just keep me in your heart and I’ll stay right there forever.”
Cremation has taken place under the care of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, New Waterford. As requested by Mom there will be no visitation or funeral service. A private burial will take place at a later date.
