It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dorothy Mary Mackie (née Lawrence), our beloved mom, grandma, and great grandma. Dorothy passed away peacefully on January 15, 2025, at the age of 98, surrounded by her devoted family. She was the heart and soul of a family that cherished her deeply, and that was her greatest source of pride and joy.
Dorothy, lovingly known as Dot, was predeceased by her husband George and her four brothers. She leaves behind a family who will forever hold her in their hearts: her three children, Bev (Stan) Schultz, Barb James (Jerry Ingham), and Ron (Brenda) Mackie. She was a proud grandma to Kim and Mike Niemans, Carmen and John Pongo, Jason and Lisa James, Justine and Darryl Kay, Jared James, Jaclyn and Jeff Skytt, Brianna and Rick Glover, Kara and Quinn Melmock, and Melissa and Jeff Rozmahel.
Dot’s greatest joys were her great-grandchildren: Olivia and Taylor Niemans, Zoe and Grace Pongo, Spencer and Tori James, Jocelyn, Ava, and Addison Kay, Marisa and Jaxon James, Sydney and Anaston Skytt, Amelia and Bennett Glover, Maisie and Beau Melmock, Sawyer and Lexi Rozmahel.
She was also cherished by many friends, alongside nieces and nephews who have fond memories of their Auntie Dot.
Born on September 20, 1926, in Bon Accord, Alberta, Dorothy was the daughter of Mavia and Al Lawrence. After graduating high school, she visited her cousin Betty Nielsen in Drumheller and decided to make it her lifelong home. Dorothy worked at Toshach’s Shoe Store until marrying George on June 11, 1946.
A talented seamstress, Dorothy balanced her work at home with active community involvement. Together, Dot and George helped establish Meals on Wheels. She was a dedicated volunteer for countless church functions with the UCW at Knox United Church, as well as being a proud member of Eastern Star, IODE, and the Red Hatters. For many years, she brought joy to residents as a hairdresser at the Sunshine Lodge. Friends at the Pioneer Trail will fondly recall her love for playing cards and serving coffee, while others will remember her as a passionate curler, golfer, and, above all, dancer. Dot and George never missed a dance at Rosedale or Morrin Hall, and her energy was contagious.
Her commitment to the Drumheller community earned her the Citizen of the Year award, a recognition of the countless hours she spent giving back. After George’s retirement, Dorothy’s adventurous spirit shone through in winters spent with friends in Yuma and summers camping at Pine Lake with her family. Every family gathering was brightened by her presence, and she leaves behind a legacy of love and togetherness.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of the Sunshine Lodge, Hillview Lodge, Drumheller Hospital Continuing Care Facility, and Joan and Colleen of Helping Hands for the compassionate care they provided in Dorothy’s later years. Recognition and gratitude must be given to Lisa James, who so devotedly cared for mom for so many years.
Dorothy’s memory will forever be a source of comfort and inspiration to all who had the privilege of knowing her. She truly was a remarkable woman who touched countless lives.
Her funeral will be held at the Knox United Church Saturday, May 24,2025 at 1:00. In lieu of flowers, please choose a charity of your choice to donate to in her memory.
