Dorothy “Dot” Hennig Obituary
Our family is saddened to announce the passing of Dot Hennig, just days after her beautiful 92nd birthday celebration.
Dorothy Edna Ailene Hennig (née Bird) was born on March 3, 1933, in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. She spent her early years on the family farm in Norbury alongside her parents and five siblings. In 1945, the family relocated to New Westminster, B.C., where she grew up.
Dot met the love of her life, Dal Hennig, as a teen while picking berries in the Fraser Valley. Soon after, a chance invitation to a demolition derby sparked a lifelong romance. After completing her Nurses training at Royal Columbian Hospital, they married in 1955. The couple settled in Penticton, where they built a home filled with love, faith, and adventure.
Dot and Dal raised their four children with strong values and a deep sense of family. Dot balanced raising her family, her nursing career, her involvement in Catholic Women’s League, and Girl Guides, fostering a tradition of service that her family carries on today.
Dot lived life with energy and enthusiasm, showing her daring spirit early by secretly racing her horse during grade school lunch breaks. That same boldness carried into adulthood, where she hiked with her family, walked daily and water-skied at age 75. Her vibrant spirit left an impression on all who knew her, with many of her children’s friends saying, “We want to be like Dot when we grow up.”
After Dal’s passing in 1999, Dot remained the heart of her growing family. She is survived by her four children, Holly Bosscher, Cathy (Russ) Van de Sype, Derrick (Janice) Hennig, and Roger (Deb) Hennig, along with 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind her siblings Muriel, Joan, Bev, Don, and Annie, as well as a large extended family and many dear friends.
Dot passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of love, strength and a life well lived. She will be deeply missed but forever cherished in the hearts of those who knew her.
A funeral mass will be held on Friday, April 4, at 1:30 p.m. at St. John Vianney Church, 361 Wade Ave, Penticton.
A livestream will be available at catholicpenticton.org
