It is with great sadness and broken hearts, that we announce the passing of our beloved Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother, Doris Carver, at the Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital on Thursday, February 20, 2025, with her daughters by her side.
Mom grew up in Skye Glen with her parents, Jimmy and Anna Gillis. Mom then came from Skye Glen to Port Hood Academy as a high school student and completed her studies in 1958, after which she went on to graduate from the Nova Scotia Teachers College in 1959. After teaching one year in Skye Glen, she returned to the Port Hood Academy as a teacher in 1960 and spent the next 34 years there at Port Hood Consolidated School. Through weekend and summer courses, she completed the requirements for her B.A. and B.Ed. at St. Francis Xavier University in 1976. In 1994, she retired following a fulfilling 35-year teaching career.
Mom married Roy Carver in 1959, and they became proud parents to two daughters, Lorna and Lisa. Mom, usually with Dad by her side, dedicated much of her time in the community over the years in numerous organizations such as the Port Hood Island View 4-H Club, the Port Hood & Judique Figure Skating Club and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Port Hood Fire Department. Mom was also very passionate about her volunteer work with her church, St. Stephen’s – Jubilee United Church and the UCW with over 60 years of service.
Mom was the most prominent face of the Royal Canadian Legion in our community. She was an Associate Legion member and was the leader of organizing the Poppy Campaign since 1985.
She is survived by her daughters, Lorna (Donald) Poirier, Judique; Lisa (Troy Hartlen) Carver, Shad Bay; Grandchildren, Charlene (Kevin) MacInnis, Calgary; Brad (Jen) Poirier, Dartmouth; Great Grandchildren, Cali and Easton MacInnis and Lauchlin Poirier; and Aunt, Mary Smith, Whycocomagh.
She is predeceased by her loving husband, Roy; her parents, Jimmy and Anna Gillis; Aunt, Flora Gillis; Uncle, Murdoch Gillis; sister, Jean Murray; and son in law, Christopher Armit.
Mom cherished her time spent with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren, always looking forward to each summer when “the kids” would come home from Calgary and Dartmouth. In her later years, Mom became an avid fan of watching curling on TV and never missed a Toronto Maple Leafs game.
We will miss Mom’s unwavering support for her family and most of all we will miss her presence. The family would like to express a heartfelt thanks to Dr. Susie Egar, Dr. Ritter, the Palliative Care team and all the staff and nurses at Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital. A special thank you to all the Continuing Care staff that made many visits to Mom at home the last few years. She always looked forward to their visits to brighten her day.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, March 2nd, 2025, from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the Port Hood & Area Resting Place, Port Hood. Funeral will be held on Monday, March 3rd, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Stephen’s – Jubilee United Church, Port Hood. Private burial at a later date.
Donations in memory may be made to St. Stephen’s – Jubilee United Church or to the Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital Palliative Care Program. Family flowers only. Online condolences may be forwarded to the family at www.haverstocks.com
