Levy, Doris Grace (Faulkner) – In the early morning hours of March 1, 2025, Doris Levy, age 97, slipped away peacefully in her sleep in her home in Drummond Hall, Parkland Clayton Park, Halifax. Doris was a shining light who spread joy and laughter wherever she went, and she will be fondly remembered for her sense of fun and her lovely smile. Although we are deeply saddened by her passing, we will be forever grateful that we had her with us for such a long time.
She is survived by her children, Don Levy, Middle Musquodoboit; Barb Power, Halifax; Heather Levy, Halifax; granddaughter, Shauna Power (Ryan Stevens), Truro; grandson, Matt Power (Amber), Bedford; great-grandchildren, Finn and Knox Stevens, and Ivy Power; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she is predeceased by her husband, Frederick Levy; son-in-law, Stephen Power; brothers, Jack, Bill, and Ralph; sisters, Evelyn, Winnie, and Helen; and special cousin and dear friend, Jean (Rasley) Brown.
Doris was the youngest of seven children, born to the late John H. and Gertrude (Gentles) Faulkner and the last surviving member of her immediate family. She loved being the “baby of the family” and bragged about it often. She had fond childhood memories of tagging along with her older siblings as they swam in the Bedford Basin, picked blueberries on Geezer’s Hill, and skated on the many frozen ponds in the Fairview area. Doris was a life-long resident of Fairview and remained a true “Fairview girl” even after she transitioned to assisted living in Parkland Clayton Park in 2017.
Doris was very athletic in her younger years and never walked when she could run! She enjoyed many sports, including bowling, skating, horseback riding, and she was a proud and valued member of the Simpson’s All-star softball team of 1948. She also enjoyed playing basketball at the YWCA in her younger years and formed a special bond with her teammates that lasted their lifetime by way of annual reunions.
Doris loved spending time with her family. She especially loved birthday celebrations, the annual family Christmas carol sing with extended family, any gathering that involved ice cream, and Sunday drives with her son, Don. She was an original member of the Fairview United Church (now Hillside United) and was active in the UCW and church choir for many years. She was also a member of the Memory Lane Trefoil Guild (Girl Guides of Canada). She had many friends and continued to make new friends, even in the last weeks of her life.
Doris had many interests and hobbies. She especially loved gardening and tole-painting and was very proud of the many ribbons and awards she won from entering her tole-painting creations, flower arrangements, and preserves in the Atlantic Winter Fair. She was always willing to try something new; she even took up quilting at age 88 because she wanted to make quilts for her great-grandchildren!
Of all her special talents, Doris will be fondly remembered for her love of singing and her outstanding musical talent. She taught herself to play guitar and piano at a young age and could play just about anything by ear. Her love of music led her to pick up the ukulele in adulthood and she spent many happy and fulfilling years making music with the Halifax Adult Ukulele Ensemble under the direction of Chalmers Doane, where she made many lifelong friends and had many adventures, including two trips to Hawaii; memories that she cherished for the rest of her life.
The family would like to express their sincerest appreciation to the entire Parkland, Clayton Park Care team for their excellent and loving care of our mother during her seven plus years of living there – she felt really loved! A special thanks goes out to the staff of Drummond Hall for their compassionate care during her last days.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Co-op, Upper Musquodoboit.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, March 14, 2025, in Hillside United Church, 12 Flamingo Dr., Halifax. A reception will follow in the church hall.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
