Left to mourn are son David (Leslie), Chemainus, BC, daughter Elaine (Reuben) Porter, daughter Denise (Ian) Cumbie, son Brian (Tracy), Surrey, BC, nine precious grandchildren, Philip(Kristen) and Steven Porter, Duncan (Hannah) and Emily (Riley Ellis) Blagdon, Olivia, Caroline and Maeve Cumbie, Sophia and Matthew Blagdon, and two great-grandchildren, Graham and Caleb Porter.
Also left to mourn are devoted sisters Lila (Lloyd) May and Winnie (Hiram) Pope, brother Ches (Regina), and brother-in-lawGerald (Barbara) Blagdon, St. Anne’s, ON, as well as a large circle of family and friends.
Dora was raised in the idyllic, close knit fishing community of Harbour Mille, Fortune Bay where she learned the importance of working hard and caring for her younger siblings, tending the gardens and the sheep. She would fondly reminisce about hermemories of growing up in the harbour and her extended family and friends who meant so much to her.
Following high school, Dora completed the summer teacher training program in St. John’s and went first to teach in Harbour Breton and then to Lamaline, where she met Arthur who was also teaching there.
Arthur and Dora got married in Boxey, Fortune Bay, in 1960 and set off to start their lives together in Conception Bay South. They eventually settled in Seal Cove where they nurtured their family and their gardens. Everyone was welcome at Nanny’s – it was a safe place where children could explore and learn to pull carrots from the garden, feed the chickens and collect eggs, help tend the beautiful flowers, or just play. A sleepover meant the chance to challenge Nanny to a game of Scrabble, help bake some treats and get lots of hugs. Countless Sunday dinners were enjoyed around the dining room table. And even as some of her children and grandchildren moved across the country and grew families of their own, she loved the regular calls from everyone to hear about their accomplishments and milestones.
She could turn old pajamas into a warm flannel quilt or crochet a doily while playing along with Jeopardy. The bounty of her garden and her hardworking hands produced raspberry jam, zucchini pickles, beets, homemade bread, chocolate chip cookies, and so much more, for all to enjoy. So many phone calls would end with a simple offer of “… need any jam, need any beets?”
She loved square dancing with the Ocean Wave Square dancers, berry-picking, bowling with Irene, Marjorie and all the girls, a game of 120s at the Parish Hall, a scratch ticket, feeding the birds or simply being in her garden.
Faith, fellowship and service were a huge part of her life. She was a lifelong parishioner of St. Peter’s Anglican Church, a faithful member of the ACW, the alter guild and choir. In later years when she could not attend in person, she always looked forward to Betty Howell’s weekly visits to catch up on the latest goings on in her Church community.
A legacy of selflessly caring for others is how Dora will be fondly and best remembered – her siblings, her children, her mother Marie after her father Philip passed, Arthur in his final years, and her grandchildren. After her own children were raised, she shared her love with many more children, caring for them as her own. Her endless patience, warm smile and simpleacts of kindness touched so many lives.
A very special thank you to Laura, Shannon and all the team at Admiral’s Coast Retirement Centre who loved and cared for Dora, and who consistently went above and beyond throughout her stay. We could not have asked for more. A thank you to all the medical staff at both St. Clare’s and the Health Sciences Complex, as well as Drs. Sutton and Verge for their excellent care.
Visitation will be at Hickey’s Funeral Home, 570 Conception Bay Highway, Conception Bay South on Monday April 21st from 3 – 7 pm. Funeral Service will be at St. Peter’s Anglican Church, Upper Gullies, on Tuesday, April 22nd at 11 am. Interment to follow in the Anglican Cemetery, Upper Gullies.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Parkinson Society of Newfoundland and Labrador or St. Peter’s Anglican Church, Upper Gullies. To sign the guest registry, or to send a message of condolence, please visit www.hickeysfuneralhome.ca.
