Obituary of Donald Patterson
Don was a lucky man. He lived a rich, full life, blessed with loving relationships and the many lifelong friendships he nurtured through the years.
Don was born and raised in Windsor. After high school, he attended the University of Windsor for an Honours BA and later Carleton University where he earned his MA. After being accepted into the Public Service Management Trainee Program, Don worked in a number of different departments before leaving to follow his true vocation as an antique dealer. The business he created, Bloomsbury and Company Antiques, ran successfully for many years until he later opted to downsize to the Ottawa Antique Market and an ancillary business, Estate Matters.
In the 1980’s, Don organized fundraising and was otherwise involved in the promotion of gay rights through Pink Triangle Services, ÉGALE, and the Lambda Foundation. Amongst his other volunteer activities, he was a member of the Committee for an Independent Canada and the Association for Systems Management. And in the context of Marion Dewar’s Project 4000, Don and a group of friends sponsored a number of refugee families.
Don had a passion for travel and made a great many trips to Europe, the Middle East, Australia, India, Argentina, and much of the US. Just last week he was talking about soon making one last trip abroad.
Predeceased by his parents, his brothers Bob and Mike, and his beloved partners Paul (1982) and Pierre (2001), Don is survived by his nieces Sherri, Shannon, Cynthia, and Barbara, and his nephews Shawn, Scott, and Chris. He will be sorely missed by his family and his many, many friends.
Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 15, 2025 in Pinecrest Remembrance Chapel, 2500 Baseline Road, Ottawa. Inurnment and Reception will follow.
