It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Don on March 13, 2025, at Juravinski Hospital at the age of 95. Loving husband of the late Marilyn nee Sheets for 70 years. Proud father of Doug (Karen), the late Jamie (Bernie), the late Brent (Elenor), Duane and Cheryl (Mike). Papa to Drew, Bailey, Kasey (Chris), Steven (Rebecca), Kevin (Darcy), the late Jessica, Richard, Sarah (Mark), Ryan, Cameron (Kate), Mitchel (Kayla), and Shaun. Great Papa to Chase, Kali-Emmaline, Wyatt, Heidi Rose, Benjamin, Jackson, Noah and Maisy. Don was predeceased by his sisters, Shirley Balkwill (Roy) and Lois Johnson (Linc). He will be missed by many nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
Don was born May 26, 1929 and raised in Hamilton by his late parents William and Gertrude Nicholson. He was a long-service employee of the Hamilton Spectator and enjoyed close to 35 years of retirement.
Don was an avid sports fan and loved listening to classical and military tattoo music. He enjoyed the simple things in life like sitting on the dock at the cottage and watching the world go by. Don also had an artistic side and was able to hone his skills in the art of stained glass during his early retirement years. He never said no to a good butter tart and savoured his Canadian Whiskey.
We would like to thank the paramedics and staff at Juravinski Hospital for their excellent care and compassion during Dad’s final days.
A heartfelt thanks to his “family” at Highgate residence in Ancaster. The friendship, love and care he received made him truly happy.
A celebration of life will take place at 7 Charterhouse Cres, Ancaster on Sunday March 23, 2025, from 1 pm until 4 pm (drop in).
In lieu of flowers donations can be made in memory of Don to the Salvation Army.
Don and Marilyn will be interred at a later date.
