Donald Gordon “Don” Sim
1947-2025
It is with heavy
hearts and great sadness that we announce the passing of Donald
“Don” Gordon Sim, 77, on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, at Valley
Regional Hospital surrounded by family.
Don was born and
raised in Northville, where he grew up on the family farm. He was the
beloved son of the late Gordon and Gertrude (Huntley) Sim. Donnie (as
he was known in the younger years) had many cherished stories and
lifelong friendships from his time growing up with his cousins and
neighbours.
Don’s early
years were filled with music, surrounded by his siblings and they all
created and played beautiful tunes. Quietly known for his talent as a
guitarist, Don was admired for his incredible finger-picking style and
his love for old country music. His music brought joy to those around
him, and this skill was passed down to his youngest son, with whom he
shared enjoyable music-filled moments.
In 1985, Don and his
family settled on Peckmeadow Road, where he quickly became known as
the go-to person for help. His neighbors valued his willingness to
lend a hand, whether it was plowing a driveway, tilling a garden,
calling the road authority about the road conditions or maintaining
the Greenfield Cemetery for many years. Don had a true love for the
land, always owning a tractor and creating his own mini farm, complete
with vegetable gardens, fruit trees, his well-maintained lawns, and a
small field of blueberry bushes. He took great pride in caring for his
home and always enjoyed sharing the fruits of his labor, inviting
friends and family to pick fresh blueberries. In recent years, the
blueberries, accompanied by the sounds of rock ‘n roll to
keep the birds at bay, became a source of joy for Don, who delighted
in filling his friends’ freezers with the
harvest.
Don was a kind,
compassionate, and generous man who was loved by all who knew him. He
was deeply proud of his family and extended family. Over the years,
Don built numerous meaningful friendships that greatly enriched his
life.
Don is survived by his
beloved wife, Mary Ann, with whom he shared 50 wonderful years
building a life together. He loved his sons, Richard and Steven (Jane
Taylor Sim), and adored his daughters, Deidre (Matthew Grant) and
Brandie-Jean (Gregory Russell). He cherished his granddaughter
Addison, who was the light of his life and spent many summer days
driving his John Deere around the yard. He also welcomed additional
grandchildren with his children’s blended families: Russell,
Wyatt, Heath, Logan, and Paityn. Don is survived by his sister-in-law,
Doris. He had a special friendship with his brother-in-law Al
Pemberton and his late brother-in-law Dwight Durling.
In addition to his
parents, Don was predeceased by his brother, Douglas, and his sister,
Margaret.
The family extends
heartfelt thanks to the Palliative Home Care team, especially Mallory,
for their incredible support. Also, a big thank you to Dr. Segato, The
VRH chemo team, and Dr. Clarke. We would also like to send another
thank you to the EHS staff and the compassionate ER doctor and nurse
that cared for Don.
Cremation has taken
place, and there will be no services at this time. He will be laid to
rest in Greenfield Cemetery at a later date.
In memory of Don,
please help out your neighbor and give kindness whenever you
can.
Arrangements have been
entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services,
