It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Donald Janes in his 98th year, peacefully at Hospice Simcoe on February 27, 2025. Don was diagnosed with an illness last spring, and he fought valiantly until the end.
Predeceased by his wife, Olive Janes (nee Hall) and his sister Janie Coles (nee Janes). Dear father of Pat Caron (Steve), Barb Cesarin (Dennis) and Brian. He will be dearly missed by his grandchildren Susan (Cole), Matt (Danielle), Sean (Ayla) and Nick; and by his great-grandchildren Madison, Justin and Connor. He will also be missed by his niece Carole Cheesman (Wayne).
Don had an extensive list of friends both here and in Florida, where he and Olive spent their winters for more than 30 years, and he will be missed by them all.
Don was a retiree of Canada Post, where he had a long career as a mail carrier and later Supervisor. He was also active in the Canadian Armed Forces Reserves and a 50-plus year member of the Royal Canadian Legion.
Having been born in Newfoundland (later settled in Toronto), Don was drawn to water and enjoyed fishing. The love of this lifestyle brought him to Ontario’s cottage country where he and his friends built a family cottage just outside of Dorset, Ontario. This is where he and Olive retired to for many years before finally settling at Sandy Cove Acres in Innisfil.
Don loved all types of sports and enjoyed watching football, golf, baseball and hockey, as well as many more. Wintering in Dunedin, Florida provided the opportunity to catch Toronto Blue Jays spring training games. Up until last April, Don was playing golf with his friends from Lake Highlander Mobile Home Park in Dunedin.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, March 8, 2025 at Innisfil Funeral Home, 7910 Yonge Street, Innisfil ON L9S 1L5, from 12:00 noon – 2:00 pm, followed by a service. Following the service, please join the family at a reception to be held at The Spoke at Sandy Cove Acres (north side), 15 Main Street, Innisfil.
Donations in his memory to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be welcomed.
Thanks to the nurses in the Transitional Care Unit at RVH as well as those at Hospice Simcoe for their care during his hospitalization.
