Don passed away peacefully on March 25, 2025 in his 93rd year at The Hospice- Windsor. Beloved husband of the late Mary Jane (nee Heighway) (2012) for 54 years. Loving father of Janice Chung (Danny) and Mark (Federica Nazzani); much loved Grandpa of Jennifer (Phillip) and Geoffrey (Ariel). Dear brother of Douglas (Gail), Diane Howarth (the late Earl), predeceased by his parents Herbert and Mable, brothers Bruce (Anne), Garnet (Ruth), Keith (Doreen), and brother-in-law Bruce (Jeanne), Don Heighway, and Robert “Bob” Heighway (survived by Mary Jane “Midge”).
Don grew up in London, Ontario where he went to Manor Park Elementary, Beal Technical and South Secondary School. He apprenticed and worked at CN Rail from 1950 – 1958. Don married Mary Jane in 1958 and they moved to Windsor. He was a woodworking teacher at Riverside Secondary School from 1958 – 1987. Don graduated from University of Windsor with a B.A. (History) in 1970. Don enjoyed travelling with Mary Jane and family over the years. He was a very active volunteer in the community. He was a long time member of the Anglican Church and served on many committees. He was involved in Scouting and earned his Gilwell designation in 1953. He was also a Cub leader in London and Windsor for 18 years. Don was a dedicated Mason and Shriner for over 50 years. He was Past Master of Trinity Lodge 521, a Scottish Rite 33o Degree Mason, a pillar of support and a mentor to many over the years.
Thank you to the staff and residents at Chartwell St. Clair Beach where he was one of their first residents in 2013. If you so desire, donations to Shriner’s Hospital for Children-Canada or Charity of Choice would be appreciated by the family. Visitation at Families First, East Windsor, 1065 Lauzon Rd (519-969-5841) on Thursday, March 27, 2025 from 3-5, 7-9 pm., with a Masonic Memorial Service under the auspices of Trinity Lodge 521 at 7:30 pm. Funeral Service Friday, March 28, 2025 at 11:00 am. Private family burial at Victoria Memorial Gardens.
