Don was born on June 26, 1958 in Weagamow Lake to Isiah and Rhoda (Tait) Chikane. He had 3 brothers, Dan, Late Timothy and Late Charles and 3 sisters, Late Christina, Madeline and Sandra.
He was also the husband of Naomi (Jeremiah) whom he married on September 21, 2002. They were married for 22 years. He had 2 children, son Timothy (Willow) and daughter Keisha.
He passed away on January 3 at 9:50/7 pm est at the Thunder Bay Regional Hospital with his wife, children, siblings, cousins, & family friends by his bedside. Don battled health challenges. During his 5.5 month stay in the hospital, he was often lonely and desired to come home again but it never came to happen due to the complexity of his condition.
There is so much to share about Don. He will be lovingly remembered for all he did and missed by many. He was a great friend to everyone he met throughout his life. He was fond of many people – too many to name. He also loved all children, his grandchildren, his siblings grandchildren, his wife’s side of family grandchildren and especially Ronan whom he missed deeply and loved.
Don loved to engage with people, he was a hard worker in all that he did throughout his life. His work history included carpentry, housing, an electrician, the mining industry and his last employment was as an Assistant Coordinator for the NCLFN Family well being program. Don and his wife ran a successful program that brought community engagement among its community members hosting various activities. A land based healing camp was prepared, built and set up along with helpers not far from the community.
Don loved life. He enjoyed the outdoors, cooking, hosting cookouts, outdoor singing, fish frys and always invited the community. He enjoyed cleaning and maintaining his home, working with his hands in repairing or building things, hunting & fishing, preparing his harvest. He was a gifted musician, being able to play various musical instruments, and loved to sing.
He also enjoyed the quiet times with his wife in prayer time and devotions. Don kept Psalm 91 close to his heart and always wanted that read to him when he couldn’t.
Don was pre deceased by his parents Isaiah and Rhoda Chikane, sister Christina (Chikane) Benson, brother Timothy Wayne Chikane, Charles Chikane and his first wife Agnes (Beardy) Chikane. Grandparents Noah Chikane & Eliza (Kakekayash) Chikane Oombash, grandparents Abraham Tait, Sarah Jane (Stoney) Tait Sakakeep and Lazarus Sakakeep and many other close family members.
Don leaves behind his wife Naomi, his daughter Keisha and grandchildren Javon, Lauren, Jordan and Selena Skunk. His son Timothy and daughter in law Willow.
He will be deeply missed by his remaining siblings. His brother Dan (Angela) Chikane along with his nieces Annamarie, Lisa and their families. His youngest sister Sandra Chikane (Roy) his niece Kyra and her children. His other sister Madeline Chikane. Sister in law Doreen Chikane, his late brother Timothy’s children: Wayne, Giles, Sharla and Aleshia, Late Trevor and their families. His brother in law Gary Benson, niece Michelle along with her children. Aunt Madeline Gray of Cat Lake.
His aunts and Uncles; Ina Williams, Rebecca Jeremiah, Isaac Sakakeep, & his late aunt Margaret Ashmugeesha Families.
He also leaves behind his in laws; Henry Jeremiah, Maggie Jeremiah, Sister in law Linda Chapman (Angus), brother in laws David, Ronald and Dwayne Jeremiah and their children. As well as his late brothers in laws John and Charlie’s children, Adopted Sister in laws; Yvonne, Lois and Ida. Not to forget his Beardy Family of Muskrat Dam.
Don has touched many peoples lives; some we know of and some that we have not heard about. The little and big things he did for others with love will never be forgotten. He fought hard to stay but it was time for him to go to his eternal home where there is no more sickness and pain.
He will be deeply missed by everyone he has met through his journey of life. May we remember him for all that he shared with us and for us to give thanks for having such an honour to have known and loved such a special man. Special thanks to the Medical team in Thunder Bay who did the best they could to continually help him. Thank you to everyone who came to visit, left messages, the emotional support, financial donations and the many prayers for Don. Thank you for loving Don.
